Audi A6 C9 — Problems & Common Faults
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The Audi A6 C9 (2024–present) — newest generation on PPE platform. Too young for used market assessment.
2026 market: New from €62,000, barely any used available. Insider pick: Wait — first used expected from 2027.

Engine Overview
The Audi A6 C9 is available with 3 engine variants — from 252 to 367 hp.
This V6 turbodiesel of the evo generation drives its four overhead camshafts via a main timing chain, with a second, shorter chain supplying the injection pump and ancillaries – the often-repeated four-chain drive of older generations of this engine family is long gone in the evo variants. The factory oil pump control on this engine family deliberately lowers oil pressure under partial load to reduce friction – affecting low revs at warm idle, noticeable more through an oil pressure warning than through noise, with the issue intensifying from roughly 150,000 kilometres onward. EGR coking, particulate filter regeneration under heavy short-trip use and AdBlue dosing are routine maintenance topics on this unit, as with any modern common-rail V6 diesel. A complete service booklet and a check of the control unit software before purchase provide clarity on the actual condition.
- !! Timing chain stretch from 120,000 km
The 3.0 TDI V6 uses a complex 4-chain drive (2 per cylinder bank + connecting chain + oil pump). Chain stretch causes incorrect valve timing and can lead to catastrophic engine failure.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start or under load, power loss on acceleration, engine warning light - !! Camshaft breakage from 80,000 km
Material defect in certain 3.0 TDI variants (codes CRT, CUE, CVM) leads to camshaft breakage with inevitable engine failure. Audi issued TPI number 2043172.
Symptoms: Ticking and knocking beyond normal diesel clatter, typically on cold start or under load - !! Turbocharger failure from 130,000 km
V6 TDI turbos frequently suffer heat damage, often caused by clogged filters and insufficient lubrication. Result is power loss or limp mode.
Symptoms: Significant power drop, black smoke, limp mode, whistling from engine bay

Permanent-magnet synchronous motor with hairpin winding on the rear axle, built on the PPE platform that also underpins the SUV sister model and the Porsche counterpart. Rotor and stator are directly cooled, saving space and weight compared with older drive concepts. The 800-volt architecture allows exceptionally high charging power, enough to add range for several hundred kilometres in around twenty minutes. In a winter test against several rivals, the drivetrain took first place for range and charging behaviour. Independent tests describe the power delivery as refined and finely dosed, powerful without harshness. Since the model line has only recently entered the market, no robust long-term experience with the drivetrain is available yet.
- !! PPE software bugs — numerous faults at market launch from 1,000 km
The A6 e-tron suffered, like the Q6 e-tron, from significant software problems: door lock unresponsive, collision warning without cause, audio system errors, app reporting faults that the MMI does not show. One vehicle spent 4 months at Ingolstadt for fault analysis.
Symptoms: Doors cannot be opened via app, warning messages for no apparent reason, CarPlay does not connect, audio non-functional. Workshop update or control unit replacement needed. - !! 12V electrical system — deep discharge during standstill
PPE platform vehicles occasionally report 12V issues after several weeks without a charge connection. The system requires regular use or a permanent charge connection.
Symptoms: Vehicle not ready to start after several days of standing. All systems unresponsive. Jump start or workshop visit needed. - ! AC charging only 11 kW as standard
Like the Q6 e-tron, the A6 e-tron is delivered as standard with only 11 kW AC charging. 22 kW is optional and was not available at market launch. A significant limitation for a premium vehicle over 70,000 €.
Symptoms: Wallbox charging takes noticeably longer than expected. Charge power display shows max. 11 kW despite a 22 kW-capable wallbox.

All-wheel drive combining an asynchronous machine on the front axle with a permanent-magnet synchronous motor on the rear axle, built on the PPE platform that also underpins the SUV sister model and the Porsche counterpart. The two axles are differently sized, with torque preferentially routed to the rear axle to favour dynamic handling. Rotor and stator are directly cooled, making the motor package noticeably more compact and lighter than the previous generation. The 800-volt architecture allows exceptionally high charging power; in winter tests the model line achieved top results for range and charging behaviour among several competitors. Since the model line has only recently entered the market, no robust long-term experience with the drivetrain is available yet.
- !! PPE software bugs — numerous faults at market launch from 1,000 km
The A6 e-tron quattro (270 kW) shares the PPE software problems: door lock unresponsive, collision warning without cause, CarPlay failure, app reporting faults that the MMI does not show. Software level at delivery often incomplete.
Symptoms: Doors cannot be opened via app, warning messages for no apparent reason, CarPlay does not connect, audio non-functional. Workshop update or control unit replacement needed. - !! Electric motor vibration — harmonic resonance noise from 10,000 km
Like the Q6 e-tron quattro, owners of the A6 e-tron quattro report harmonic resonance noises from the front. Audi plans balance weights for the electric motors. Dealers initially classify the noise as normal.
Symptoms: Harmonic humming or droning from the front at 50–60 km/h, independent of tyre brand. Gets louder at higher speeds.

| Recall: Digital Instrument Cluster Can Go Black On 2021 Audi models (predecessor platform to the C9), the digital instrument cluster can suddenly go dark due to increased connection resistance in the cable. Audi resolves this via a software update reducing sensitivity to voltage fluctuations. Symptoms: Instrument cluster display goes suddenly black while driving or on startup. | Low | |
| Recall: PHEV Battery Overheating Risk During Charging KBA action 93AD affects plug-in hybrid A6, A7, Q5 from production period 08/2019–08/2024. Cell modules in the high-voltage battery can overheat during charging and cause a vehicle fire. Software update as solution (approx. 60 min workshop visit). Symptoms: Unusual smells or heat generation during charging. | Low |
