VW Tiguan

CAWA 2.0L TFSI 170 hp Automatic All-wheel drive SUV 2008–2011
✖ Stay Away!
Engine CAWA ✖ Stay Away! 8,630–23,950 €

The CAWA is the EA888 Gen1 engine with 200 hp in the Tiguan I and shares the known weaknesses: high oil consumption from excessively thin piston rings, timing chain wear, and inlet valve carbonisation. Requires close maintenance and oil level checks every 2,000 km.

Fun Factor? Decent

Turbocharged Tiguan with Bite

170 hp and 4Motion make the Tiguan I a nimble all-rounder — surprisingly direct shove, even if characterless.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Timing chain — premature wear

The timing chain on the CAWA can wear from as early as 100,000 km, especially with poor oil maintenance. Chain tensioner and guide rails wear first. Repair is time-consuming as the engine needs to be largely dismantled.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, timing chain rattle after warm start, camshaft sensor fault, power loss

1,000–2,200 € from 110,000 km
!! Oil control ring coked up — massive oil consumption

On the CAWA 2.0 TFSI EA888 Gen2 the oil control rings are too narrow and their drain-back holes coke up. Oil enters the combustion chamber and burns off. Approx. 800,000 vehicles affected (model years 2008–2011).

Symptoms: 1 litre oil consumption per 1,000 km or more, blue smoke on cold start, oil pressure warning, spark plug fouling

2,500–6,500 € from 70,000 km
!! High oil consumption — worn piston rings

The EA888 Gen1 CAWA is known for high oil consumption due to structurally too-narrow piston oil control rings. Engine oil enters the combustion chamber and burns off. Up to 500 g/1,000 km is considered normal factory consumption.

Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start, rising oil consumption above 500 g/1,000 km, oil spots under the vehicle

2,500–5,000 € from 100,000 km
!! Intake valve carbon build-up from direct injection

TSI direct injection leaves no fuel wash on the intake valves. Intake manifold swirl flaps foul and seize. Power loss and hesitation result.

Symptoms: Fluctuating engine speed, hesitation in part-load range, power flat spot at low revs, rough idle

300–800 € from 80,000 km
! Spark plugs and ignition coils failing prematurely

If spark plugs are not replaced at the prescribed interval (approx. 30,000 km) they damage the ignition coils. High repair costs result when both fail together. Early replacement saves significantly.

Symptoms: Cylinder misfire, engine shaking, MIL, power loss especially in damp conditions

100–400 € from 60,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 10

!! Gearbox Haldex coupling blocked by oil sludge

On 4Motion models the Haldex coupling pre-pressure pump becomes blocked by oil sludge. The rear wheels are then no longer driven and the front wheels spin. No regular oil change = expensive damage.

150–1,200 € from 80,000 km
!! Brakes Brake discs worn before 30,000 km

One of the most frequent faults on the Tiguan 5N: brake discs with warping and scoring already below 30,000 km. TÜV reports record a clearly above-average brake fault rate on the Tiguan; VW partially covered warranty repairs.

180–450 € from 30,000 km
!! Suspension Suspension and axle components: 6× elevated fault rate

TÜV documents suspension defects on the Tiguan 5N at a fault rate six times higher than comparable vehicles. Ball joints, bushings, and driveshafts wear prematurely, especially under towing use.

200–800 € from 80,000 km
!! Suspension Rear axle spring breakage

Broken springs on the rear axle are a known issue, especially on vehicles used for towing. The lower spring seat corrodes through and the spring snaps off. Around 90% of diesel Tiguans were fitted with a towbar.

150–400 € from 100,000 km
!! Electronics Electric power steering fails

The electromechanical power steering (EPS) on the Tiguan 5N can fail without warning. The driver suddenly notices heavy steering. The cause is often a faulty control unit or defective sensors.

400–1,500 € from 90,000 km
!! Electronics Electric parking brake seized

The electric parking brake on the Tiguan 5N jams and can no longer be released. In acute cases only disconnecting the battery helps. The cause is often a failed actuator motor or software fault.

300–800 € from 80,000 km
! Rust Rust on door lock surrounds and wheel arch edges

As early as 4 years in, many Tiguan 5N show rust around the door lock surrounds. Wheel arch edges and the rear axle mounts also corrode through. Galvanised bolts are replaced with plain steel ones — rust keeps coming back.

200–1,500 € from 60,000 km
! HVAC Air conditioning no longer cools reliably

The air conditioning on the Tiguan 5N is a known weak spot. Compressor or magnetic clutch fails, sometimes also refrigerant circuit leaks. Should be checked for function at inspection.

400–1,200 € from 100,000 km
! Interior Panoramic roof rattles and leaks

The optional panoramic or sliding sunroof on the Tiguan 5N tends to rattle and occasionally leak in rain. Seals harden and the guide rails become dirty.

150–600 € from 80,000 km
! Electronics Headlights fog up internally

Internal condensation in the headlights is a known issue on the Tiguan 5N. Leaking breather valves or cracked seals allow moisture inside. Long-term this damages electronics and the reflector.

100–600 € from 70,000 km
