VW Sport & Style
Most powerful PD TDI with 170 PS. High output at the expense of durability — PD unit injectors and camshaft wear faster than on lower-powered variants.
PD Power in an SUV
170 hp PD TDI with manual — strong pull, but the unit-injector engine is rough and noisy.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The BMN (PD 170 PS) uses piezo PDEs which fail more often than the simpler solenoid PDEs in lower-output variants. VW dealers cleaned them by ultrasonic bath (approx. €350); with heavier damage a full replacement is needed.
Symptoms: Rough idle and hesitation on throttle, black exhaust, difficult cold start, cylinder misfire
A snapped timing belt on the BMN causes immediate engine failure. Interval is 150,000 km, but an earlier change is advisable on vehicles without complete service history. Cylinder head bolt cracks have been documented on early BMN engines.
Symptoms: Sudden engine stall, engine noises when timing belt snaps
The BMN 2.0 TDI 170 PS with piezo PD units is particularly susceptible to injector failures. Seat initiated a workshop campaign (23K1) for model years 2006–2009.
Symptoms: Hesitation and stuttering, power loss, engine warning light, cold starting difficulties
From around 230,000 km, cracks appear in the EGR cooler of the BMN; coolant escapes or is burned. Bluish smoke after cold start, sporadic coolant loss without external leakage.
Symptoms: Coolant level falls below minimum, bluish diesel smoke after cold start, pressure relief noise at expansion tank
The engine wiring harness of the BMN 2.0 TDI 170 shows chafing and short circuits at higher mileage. A documented failure at 103,000 km with €1,019 repair costs.
Symptoms: Intermittent engine cut-outs, engine warning light, sporadic fault codes
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
On 4Motion models the Haldex coupling pre-pressure pump becomes blocked by oil sludge. The rear wheels are then no longer driven and the front wheels spin. No regular oil change = expensive damage.
One of the most frequent faults on the Tiguan 5N: brake discs with warping and scoring already below 30,000 km. TÜV reports record a clearly above-average brake fault rate on the Tiguan; VW partially covered warranty repairs.
TÜV documents suspension defects on the Tiguan 5N at a fault rate six times higher than comparable vehicles. Ball joints, bushings, and driveshafts wear prematurely, especially under towing use.
Broken springs on the rear axle are a known issue, especially on vehicles used for towing. The lower spring seat corrodes through and the spring snaps off. Around 90% of diesel Tiguans were fitted with a towbar.
The electromechanical power steering (EPS) on the Tiguan 5N can fail without warning. The driver suddenly notices heavy steering. The cause is often a faulty control unit or defective sensors.
The electric parking brake on the Tiguan 5N jams and can no longer be released. In acute cases only disconnecting the battery helps. The cause is often a failed actuator motor or software fault.
As early as 4 years in, many Tiguan 5N show rust around the door lock surrounds. Wheel arch edges and the rear axle mounts also corrode through. Galvanised bolts are replaced with plain steel ones — rust keeps coming back.
The air conditioning on the Tiguan 5N is a known weak spot. Compressor or magnetic clutch fails, sometimes also refrigerant circuit leaks. Should be checked for function at inspection.
The optional panoramic or sliding sunroof on the Tiguan 5N tends to rattle and occasionally leak in rain. Seals harden and the guide rails become dirty.
Internal condensation in the headlights is a known issue on the Tiguan 5N. Leaking breather valves or cracked seals allow moisture inside. Long-term this damages electronics and the reflector.
