VW T6 SG

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 1 engine variants · How we rate

The T6 SG is the special homologation variant of the VW Transporter T6 — technically identical to the T6.1 but produced under the older T6 type approval (2019–2024). The same strengths and weaknesses as the T6.1 apply.

All engines come from the EA288 diesel program: the 2.0 TDI in various power levels from 90 to 204 hp, supplemented by BiTDI variants with twin-turbo charging. The weakest 90 hp diesel is marginal for the heavy van — from 150 hp it becomes comfortable. BiTDI variants with 204 hp offer effortless power, but higher turbo stress increases maintenance demands.

Typical van weaknesses remain: underbody rust (especially in winter and commercial use), EGR issues with short-distance driving, and the electric sliding door on Multivan/Caravelle versions. DPF regeneration needs regular highway driving.

Test drive: Inspect underbody for rust. Test DSG for juddering. Check sliding doors. AC at full blast. Check oil level (commercial owners often cut corners on service).

Market 2026: The T6 SG is barely differentiated from the T6.1 on the used market — buyers focus on trim (Multivan, Caravelle, Kombi) rather than type designation.

Insider pick: A 2.0 TDI with 150 hp and manual gearbox in Multivan spec with a private previous owner is the safest bet.

Recall: door lock freezes — doors open while driving

Insufficiently sealed Bowden cables in the door locking system allow water ingress that freezes in frost and blocks the mechanism. Apparent locking possible; door can open while driving. Over 67,000 vehicles affected in Germany.

Symptoms: Door shows as closed in cockpit but can be opened from outside; door lock doesn't respond correctly after frost

Recall: steering rack sealing plug defective — power steering can fail

Supplier defect: sealing plug on the electromechanical steering rack not correctly pressed in. Penetrating moisture can cause a short circuit, after which power steering assistance cuts out. Vehicle remains steerable but with significantly greater effort.

Symptoms: Steering warning lamp illuminates, steering becomes heavier; control unit shows power steering fault
