VW Passat

DTUA 2.0L TDI 200 hp Automatic Front-wheel drive 2020–2024
– Be Careful
Engine DTUA – Be Careful 7,130–24,650 €

Top EA288 variant in the GTD with 200 hp. Twin-dosing and larger turbocharger. Sporty diesel with high torque.

Fun Factor? Decent

Powerful Cruiser

200 hp 2.0 TDI pulls the Passat along effortlessly — strong low-down punch, cultured sound, low cruising revs. Not a sports car, but an excellent grand tourer.

Engine Weaknesses 10

!! EGR Cooler Cracks and Coolant Loss

EGR cooler develops hairline cracks — coolant enters the exhaust path. Silent coolant loss without visible leaks is the main symptom. Hydrolocking risks total engine failure.

Symptoms: Slow coolant consumption, white smoke, sweet exhaust smell in cabin, engine warning light with fault code P200200.

750–1,500 € from 100,000 km
!! Wet Timing Belt with Vulnerable Water Pump

Wet-running timing belt operates in an oil bath. The water pump can fail before the official change interval and contaminate the belt. Recommendation: early combined replacement.

Symptoms: Whistling from the engine bay, sudden overheating, coolant loss, belt residue visible in oil at oil change.

600–1,400 € from 130,000 km
!! EGR System EA288 evo Tarraco 200 hp

The DTUA (EA288 evo, 147 kW) in the Tarraco uses the complex SCR twin-dosing system with two AdBlue injectors. Malfunctions in the dosing valves, sensors or SCR catalysts risk expensive repairs.

Symptoms: AdBlue system warning, elevated NOx emissions, engine warning light, SCR system fault codes

300–2,000 € from 80,000 km
!! Oil-Bath Timing Belt Premature Wear EA288 evo

The EA288 evo DTUA uses the oil-bath timing belt for the oil drive. Use of incorrect oil specification or very long change intervals can cause the belt to fray and contaminate the oil system.

Symptoms: Metallic particles in oil, turbo noises, oil pressure warning at very high mileage

600–1,400 € from 180,000 km
!! DPF Regeneration Fails with Short-Trip Use

EA288 evo requires long-distance runs for complete DPF regeneration. Frequent incomplete regenerations lead to oversaturation. Turbocharger damage from backpressure is possible as a consequence.

Symptoms: Warning 'particulate filter full', power reduction, increased consumption. Engine runs briefly rough after idle phase.

350–1,400 € from 120,000 km
!! Turbocharger Wear and Bearing Damage

EA288 evo turbocharger is loaded more heavily at 190 hp. Oil coking after hot shutdown accelerates bearing wear. The VTG mechanism can stick from soot, causing boost pressure drop.

Symptoms: Whistling or howling on acceleration, power loss, oil in air filter box or intercooler, fault code P0299.

1,200–2,800 € from 180,000 km
!! EGR Valve Coked and Sticking

The EGR valve wears through soot deposits and increasingly sticks. The result is idle fluctuations, stumbling and engine warning light. Cleaning or replacement needed; check EGR cooler for cracks at the same time.

Symptoms: Idle stumbling, engine warning light, power loss especially at low revs

300–1,000 € from 120,000 km
!! DPF Blocked by Short-Trip Use

With predominantly short-trip use the DPF cannot complete forced regeneration. Soot accumulation causes excessive backpressure, power loss and increased turbo loading. Professional cleaning or replacement required.

Symptoms: DPF warning display, increased fuel consumption, power loss, engine warning light

350–1,500 € from 100,000 km
! NOx Sensor and Differential Pressure Sensor Failed

Exhaust aftertreatment sensors fail sporadically. The NOx sensor and DPF differential pressure sensor are frequently affected. Leads to limp mode or incorrect DPF regeneration.

Symptoms: Engine warning light with no clear mechanical cause, incorrect consumption display, limp mode, AdBlue warning despite full tank.

150–700 € from 80,000 km
! NOx Sensor and Differential Pressure Sensor Failed

The NOx sensor and DPF differential pressure sensor can fail prematurely. Incorrect readings trigger the engine warning light and can activate limp mode without any actual engine damage.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, intermittent power reduction, fault codes P2200 or P244x

100–600 € from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 10

!! Electronics Infotainment System Hangs and Crashes

The MIB3 infotainment system on B8 FL models (from 2019) responds slowly or freezes completely. Restart required; software updates often only solve the problem temporarily. Same pattern as on the Golf 8.

400–1,200 € from 40,000 km
!! HVAC Panoramic Roof Drain Blocked, Water Ingress

Blocked drain hoses in the A-pillars lead to water entering the interior. According to the service manual, drains must be cleaned at every service — if missed, water backs up and runs into the car.

80–300 € from 60,000 km
!! Suspension Shock Absorbers Prematurely Leaking

The TÜV Report flags unusually frequent axle suspension and damper damage on the Passat B8. As a fleet vehicle with high mileage, shock absorbers wear out earlier than on privately owned cars.

300–800 € from 120,000 km
!! Gearbox DSG DQ381 Judders at Creep Speed

The 7-speed DSG DQ381 (wet clutch) occasionally shows rough gear changes at low-speed manoeuvring and stop-and-go. Regular oil changes every 60,000 km are essential — if missed, follow-up costs increase sharply.

150–2,500 € from 100,000 km
! Electronics Electric Boot Blind and Tailgate Defective

The electric luggage compartment blind no longer opens or jams. Tailgate motor and sensor also fail. Mainly affects estate models with the optional electric tailgate.

250–700 € from 80,000 km
! Electronics Reversing Camera Intermittently Failed

The reversing camera shows no image or only produces a signal at certain temperatures. Corroded connectors in the rear area or a defective camera module are often the cause.

150–450 € from 70,000 km
! Brakes Brake Discs Wear Out Early

TÜV notes unusually frequent worn brakes on the B8. As a typical company car with lots of city driving and motorway braking, discs and pads wear significantly faster than in private use.

200–500 € from 60,000 km
! Rust Underbody Corrosion on High-Mileage Vehicles

Older B8s with high mileage show rust formation on underbody areas, particularly on brake lines and bolt heads. As a former company car, professional underbody treatment is often missing.

300–1,500 € from 130,000 km
! Electronics Active Info Display (Digital Cockpit) Failure

The optional digital instrument cluster (Active Info Display) freezes or shows artefacts. Mainly affects early facelift examples. Cause often a software fault or defective display module.

500–1,800 € from 50,000 km
! HVAC Climate Control Sensors and Window Regulator Defective

Climate control sensors (sun sensor, temperature sensor) fail, causing irregular cooling or heating. Window regulator control units are also known failure candidates.

100–600 € from 80,000 km
