VW Passat
EA888 evo4 with 272 hp in the Passat facelift. Top petrol with all-wheel drive. Successor to the 280 hp unit.
Muscular All-Wheel Passat
272 hp 2.0 TSI with 4Motion in the B8-FL is a convincingly sporting Passat — strong thrust, secure traction, modern chassis.
Engine Weaknesses 5
On the EA888 Gen3B, timing chain problems only arise at higher mileage from around 120,000–150,000 km. Improved chain tensioners compared to Gen2, but not wear-free.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start that eases at operating temperature. Cam timing fault code. Serious engine damage on chain jump.
Under sustained high load (track use, tuning) piston ring lands can fracture — documented at 133,000 km. Production engines in standard use are significantly less affected.
Symptoms: Massively elevated oil consumption as early warning sign, misfires under full load, engine stop warning.
On Gen3B, injectors can clog from soot build-up or develop leaks. Affects lambda regulation. Dual injection reduces the problem compared to Gen2 but does not eliminate it entirely.
Symptoms: Rough running, misfire fault codes, increased fuel consumption.
The EA288evo DNUA EGR cooler tends to crack, allowing coolant into the exhaust tract. Consequence: coolant loss, white smoke, engine protection mode. Repair €300–1,000.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, white exhaust smoke, engine protection mode, EGR fault code
The EA888 Gen3B/Gen4 DNUA can lose oil at the rear crankshaft seal. Diagnosis only possible with gearbox removal. Typical from around 80,000 km with neglected oil changes.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the vehicle at the gearbox/engine interface, oil mist visible, gearbox oil can become contaminated
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
The MIB3 infotainment system on B8 FL models (from 2019) responds slowly or freezes completely. Restart required; software updates often only solve the problem temporarily. Same pattern as on the Golf 8.
Blocked drain hoses in the A-pillars lead to water entering the interior. According to the service manual, drains must be cleaned at every service — if missed, water backs up and runs into the car.
The TÜV Report flags unusually frequent axle suspension and damper damage on the Passat B8. As a fleet vehicle with high mileage, shock absorbers wear out earlier than on privately owned cars.
The 7-speed DSG DQ381 (wet clutch) occasionally shows rough gear changes at low-speed manoeuvring and stop-and-go. Regular oil changes every 60,000 km are essential — if missed, follow-up costs increase sharply.
The electric luggage compartment blind no longer opens or jams. Tailgate motor and sensor also fail. Mainly affects estate models with the optional electric tailgate.
The reversing camera shows no image or only produces a signal at certain temperatures. Corroded connectors in the rear area or a defective camera module are often the cause.
TÜV notes unusually frequent worn brakes on the B8. As a typical company car with lots of city driving and motorway braking, discs and pads wear significantly faster than in private use.
Older B8s with high mileage show rust formation on underbody areas, particularly on brake lines and bolt heads. As a former company car, professional underbody treatment is often missing.
The optional digital instrument cluster (Active Info Display) freezes or shows artefacts. Mainly affects early facelift examples. Cause often a software fault or defective display module.
Climate control sensors (sun sensor, temperature sensor) fail, causing irregular cooling or heating. Window regulator control units are also known failure candidates.
