VW Passat
EA888 evo4 with 190 hp. Powerful turbopetrol with good torque. DSG only.
All-round Estate
190 hp 2.0 TSI in the Passat Variant offers enough power for relaxed touring and occasional spirited driving — balanced and practical.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The EA888 Gen4 shares the timing chain architecture with Gen3. Chain stretch is possible from around 120,000–150,000 km. Longlife oil intervals accelerate wear. In extreme cases the chain jumps and catastrophic engine damage results.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start, check engine light, cam timing OBD fault, hesitation
The electric or mechanical water pump fails and interrupts coolant circulation. In the Cupra Formentor (EA888), repair quotes above €2,000 have been reported. Ignoring warning signs risks engine damage.
Symptoms: Temperature gauge rises, coolant warning light, steam from the engine bay, power reduction
On the DNNA 2.0 TSI EA888 Gen4, the timing chain can exceed the manufacturer's tolerance after 130,000+ km and throw the cam phaser out of time.
Symptoms: Brief cold-start rattle, rough idle, cam phaser fault code
On the EA888 Gen3/4, the camshaft carrier (cam bridge) tends to leak. Oil seeps from the camshaft phaser seals into the upper timing chain cover and from there to the outside.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the vehicle, dropping oil level, oil smell after shutdown, smoke on a hot engine
In the Golf 8 and Cupra Leon, software bugs are a persistent known problem: frozen display, faulty driver assistance, eCall failure. VW temporarily halted deliveries due to software problems.
Symptoms: Display freezes, lane-keeping assist drops out, cameras show no image, emergency call system non-functional
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
The MIB3 infotainment system on B8 FL models (from 2019) responds slowly or freezes completely. Restart required; software updates often only solve the problem temporarily. Same pattern as on the Golf 8.
Blocked drain hoses in the A-pillars lead to water entering the interior. According to the service manual, drains must be cleaned at every service — if missed, water backs up and runs into the car.
The TÜV Report flags unusually frequent axle suspension and damper damage on the Passat B8. As a fleet vehicle with high mileage, shock absorbers wear out earlier than on privately owned cars.
The 7-speed DSG DQ381 (wet clutch) occasionally shows rough gear changes at low-speed manoeuvring and stop-and-go. Regular oil changes every 60,000 km are essential — if missed, follow-up costs increase sharply.
The electric luggage compartment blind no longer opens or jams. Tailgate motor and sensor also fail. Mainly affects estate models with the optional electric tailgate.
The reversing camera shows no image or only produces a signal at certain temperatures. Corroded connectors in the rear area or a defective camera module are often the cause.
TÜV notes unusually frequent worn brakes on the B8. As a typical company car with lots of city driving and motorway braking, discs and pads wear significantly faster than in private use.
Older B8s with high mileage show rust formation on underbody areas, particularly on brake lines and bolt heads. As a former company car, professional underbody treatment is often missing.
The optional digital instrument cluster (Active Info Display) freezes or shows artefacts. Mainly affects early facelift examples. Cause often a software fault or defective display module.
Climate control sensors (sun sensor, temperature sensor) fail, causing irregular cooling or heating. Window regulator control units are also known failure candidates.
