VW Passat

AZM 2.0L 8V 116 hp Manual Front-wheel drive 2000–2005
– Be Careful
Engine AZM – Be Careful 3,020–9,400 €

EA113 naturally aspirated with 85 kW and simple single-point injection. Robust and low-maintenance, but sluggish. Throttle body and idle control valve as typical wear items.

Fun Factor? Decent

Modest NA Passat

116 hp 2.0 8V in the B5-GP is the solid, uncomplicated choice without turbo risks — no fun engine, but reliable.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Timing belt failure when interval exceeded

The timing belt on the AZM must be replaced every 90,000 km / 6 years. If exceeded, belt failure and total engine damage are at risk.

Symptoms: No warning; engine suddenly fails to start, no compression

300–600 € from 95,000 km
!! Valve stem seals leaking

The AZM valve stem seals wear and cause oil consumption of up to 1 L per 1,000 km. Characteristic blue smoke briefly after engine start.

Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start for a few seconds, elevated oil consumption, no external oil loss

200–600 € from 130,000 km
!! Misfires and lean running

Common fault patterns on the AZM: MAF sensor, throttle body or defective crankcase ventilation cause lean-running fault codes and misfires.

Symptoms: Hesitation after cold start, fault code P0171 (mixture too lean), engine warning light, rough idle

80–400 € from 100,000 km
! Elevated oil consumption from piston ring wear

The 2.0 8V AZM in the Golf 4/5 tends towards elevated oil consumption with increasing mileage through worn piston rings. In older vehicles consumption can rise to over 1 litre per 1,000 km.

Symptoms: Blue oil smoke from exhaust, regular top-up of engine oil required, oil carbon deposits on spark plugs

600–2,000 € from 150,000 km
! Cam cover gasket leaking

The cam cover gasket of the 2.0 8V AZM hardens with age and leaks. Oil runs down the spark plug apertures and can contaminate the spark plugs. Inexpensive repair.

Symptoms: Oil stains on engine and in engine bay around the cylinder head, oil smell when hot, oil-fouled spark plugs, hesitation

30–150 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Rust Rust on sills, wheel arches, and door lower edges

Wing flange edges, wheel arches, sills (especially at jacking points) and door lower edges where drain holes are blocked. Advanced perforation often makes repair uneconomical.

400–1,800 €
!! Suspension Front axle control arms: premature wear

The B5/B5-GP multi-link front axle wears at control arm bushings and ball joints. Complete control arm set per side approximately €350–900 including labour.

350–900 € from 110,000 km
!! Electronics Comfort control unit: failure due to water ingress

The comfort control unit in the driver's footwell is damaged by water ingress (blocked scuttle drains). Central locking, electric windows, and interior lighting fail.

150–600 €
!! Body Water ingress into footwells: blocked drains

Blocked drain holes in the scuttle panel (under battery and brake booster), defective door seals, and clogged sunroof drains cause water ingress. Wet carpets lead to corrosion and electrical damage.

30–200 €
!! HVAC AC compressor: magnetic clutch failure

The AC compressor frequently fails due to a defective magnetic clutch or worn control valve. Compressor replacement including flush and recharge approximately €700–1,500.

700–1,500 € from 120,000 km
! Electronics Window regulator motors: failure front left/right

Electric window regulators in the Passat 3BG fail due to motor wear or broken cables. The driver's side is most frequently affected.

80–300 €
! Brakes Handbrake cable: seizing due to corrosion

The handbrake cable corrodes inside its sleeve and seizes, especially in low-mileage vehicles and after periods of standing. Rear wheels drag or the handbrake no longer holds.

100–350 €
