VW GTI
The 1.6 AVY with 125 PS in the rare Lupo GTI is a high-revving naturally aspirated petrol engine with a 16-valve cylinder head. It requires at least 98 octane Super Plus. The critical weak point is the timing belt tensioner: its plastic ring can come loose, causing the belt to lose tension. All examples are now over 20 years old.
115 hp, 997 kg β the original GTI spirit in miniature
Dimensions and power-to-weight like the original 1976 Golf GTI. TopGear: 'makes the most of twisty lanes where even a Golf GTI would feel bloated.' Three-cylinder sound internally amplified β 'could almost belong in a Lamborghini' per Goodwood. 8.8 seconds to 60 is slow, but feels fast. The purest GTI in decades.
Engine Weaknesses 5
A pressed-on plastic ring can separate from the timing belt tensioner pulley, causing the belt to lose 3β4 mm of tension. If the belt jumps teeth, pistons and valves collide β expensive engine damage.
Symptoms: Irregular engine noise, power loss, engine stumbling at idle β often no warning before the belt snaps
Ignition coils on the AVY engine are prone to fine cracks at the connector housing, through which the spark arcs to the metal casing instead of the plug. The problem is more pronounced in wet and cold conditions.
Symptoms: Rough running especially when cold, misfires during part-load acceleration below 1,500 rpm, engine stumbling after rain
The high-compression AVY requires 98 octane fuel (Super Plus) without exception. Using 95 octane leads to knock tendency which the engine management compensates by retarding ignition timing β with noticeable power loss.
Symptoms: Noticeably reduced power, knocking sound under high load, engine warning light may appear
The gearbox fitted in the Lupo GTI is considered somewhat underspecified for the 125 hp. With sporty use, owners report premature gearbox failures or stiff gear changes, sometimes before 100,000 km.
Symptoms: Stiff gear engagement, grating sound when shifting, gearbox hangs or does not lock in cleanly
The AVY 1.6 16V is prone to worn valve stem seals that lead to elevated oil consumption. The oil burns in the combustion chamber. In many cases repair is possible without removing the cylinder head.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start, oil consumption 0.3β0.8 l/1,000 km, oily spark plugs
