VW 3L
Three-cylinder diesel from the '3-litre Lupo'. 61 PS, extremely economical. Automated manual gearbox. Cult status.
Frugal Mini Diesel
61 hp TDI in the Lupo — surprisingly nimble thanks to the low weight, but the narrow diesel rev band limits the pleasure. Sensible, not passionate.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The oil pump drive chain in the 1.2 TDI snaps without warning when worn. With a broken drive the oil pump can no longer build pressure, leading to total engine failure within seconds.
Symptoms: Plastic swarf in the oil filter as early warning; otherwise sudden engine failure without signs, no oil pressure warning at low rpm
In rare cases, crankshaft fractures have been documented in the 1.2 TDI. The 3-cylinder diesel engine generates high impulse forces that can cause crankshaft cracking under material fatigue.
Symptoms: Sudden engine failure, loud bang or striking noise, immediate engine seizure
The oil pump drive chain on the 1.2 TDI ANY is under-dimensioned and snaps at around 160,000–220,000 km. The chain chews through the aluminium cover. Engine damage without warning is a risk.
Symptoms: Rough idle, vibrations at low revs, oil loss at chain cover, engine rattling
The 6-speed robotised gearbox in the A2 3L / Lupo 3L tends to gear actuator malfunctions and pressure accumulator problems. Basic settings lock up; manual reprogramming or replacement necessary.
Symptoms: Gearbox warning, unwanted declutching when stopping, car only starts in neutral, jerky gear changes
The hydraulic unit of the automated manual gearbox suffers from corroded connectors and sensor seals. Moisture ingress destroys pressure sensors. Water and contact corrosion are the main causes.
Symptoms: Fault codes for brake pressure sensor, gearbox warning, intermittent cut-outs, gear change problems in wet conditions
