VW ID.Buzz 1(EB)
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The VW ID.Buzz has been the electric Bulli successor since 2022 and emotionally the strongest model in the ID family. Available in short (4.71 m) and long (4.96 m) versions, with 5 or 7 seats.
Powertrains: 150 kW rear motor (Standard), 210 kW rear motor (Pro) or 250 kW GTX dual-motor AWD. Batteries 77 or 86 kWh for up to 461 km WLTP.
Weaknesses combine MEB platform issues (12V drain, software, heat pump) with Bulli-specific traits: large windshield and sliding doors offer attack surface for wind noise and seal problems. High weight (>2.4 tons) stresses tires and brakes more than ID.4/ID.5.
Test drive tip: Test sliding doors for smoothness and noise. Check wind noise on highway. Try DC charging.
Market 2026: High demand, especially the long version. Used examples still rare and expensive. Emotional Bulli factor keeps resale stable.
Insider pick: ID.Buzz Pro Long (86 kWh) with 7 seats — the complete Bulli experience with maximum range and space.

Good ChoiceEngine Overview
The VW ID.Buzz 1 is available with 3 engine variants — from 150 to 340 hp.
Dual-motor variant of the MEB platform with AWD and up to 250 kW (340 hp) in GTX trim. Front axle motor as additional failure source — front drive failures documented on 2023 models. Door handle recall affects approx. 98,800 vehicles (water ingress, unintended unlocking). ACC phantom braking in rain and shadows. HV battery fire risk recall on 82 kWh variants. More power and traction than single motor, but also more potential failure points.
- !! Elevated brake defects from 40,000 km
A five-fold elevated brake defect rate compared to average has been documented. Rear drum brakes tend to squeal and produce uneven braking; missing ESP pump bolts led to an official recall.
Symptoms: Squealing rear brakes, jerky deceleration, ESP/brake warning message - !! Production-related power loss
Ramp-up issues at the stator production facility in Kassel in 2023 led to quality variations: some motors do not reach the specified maximum output of 210 kW. VW sold affected units without rework.
Symptoms: Lower than expected acceleration, 0–100 km/h time worse than factory spec - !! On-board charger defect (AC charging)
Isolated reports of failed on-board chargers: vehicles no longer charge via AC (11 kW) while DC charging continues to work. Affects individual ID.4 model year 2024 vehicles. OBC replacement required.
Symptoms: AC charging aborts after a few seconds, charging power fluctuates wildly, DC charging normal
+ 4 more engine weaknesses + vehicle weaknesses
MEB platform electric motor (rear-wheel drive), 150–220 kW system output. Mechanically robust, but software and HV system reliability in early model years (2020–2022) was below average. Heat pump (CO2 system) is failure-prone due to extreme operating pressures. 12V electrical system is a known weak point.
- !! OTA software update bricks vehicle from 25,000 km
Failed OTA updates (v3.0) can render the vehicle undriveable. Control units of different generations in the same vehicle lead to incompatibilities. Workshop stay of up to 10 days required. Further faults often follow after repair.
Symptoms: After OTA update the vehicle no longer starts or is completely locked. No fault message before failure — update ran in the background. - !! HV battery cell drift and module failure from 15,000 km
Individual battery cells deviate by more than 500 mV from neighbouring cells. The BMS then blocks charging and limits power. Module replacement as a spare part costs around 1,400–3,600 €. Early cases affected almost new vehicles.
Symptoms: Sudden range collapse, fault message in the drivetrain system, charging session stopped prematurely or refused. Vehicle still drives but with severely reduced power. - !! 12V battery complete discharge from 5,000 km
Early ID.3 models (MY 2020–2021) discharged their 12V battery overnight as control units did not switch off correctly. Vehicle completely dead in the morning. Software update from v2.0 onwards fixes the problem. VW replaces the battery free of charge on affected vehicles.
Symptoms: Vehicle does not start in the morning, no response at all from buttons or door handles. Orange warning triangle or 12V symbol visible in display before total failure.

Permanent magnet synchronous motor of the MEB platform with up to 210 kW (286 hp). Munro Live rates the APP550 as second-best EV motor on the market. The motor itself is robust — weaknesses lie in the MEB ecosystem: 12V battery drains while parked, heat pump loses CO2 refrigerant through leaking seals, and DC fast charging can abort due to software. OTA updates can be completely blocked by a faulty radar sensor. Service action 93P7 addresses HV battery cell defects in 2021 models.
- !! MEB dual-motor software — more complex fault picture than the Born
The Tavascan's dual drivetrain (APP550, Dual-Motor) increases software complexity. In addition to the usual MEB infotainment bugs, calibration errors between front and rear motors are reported. Stability issues in certain driving situations have been noted.
Symptoms: Infotainment crashes; missing Cupra Connect connection after workshop visit; assistance systems fail during driving - !! 12V battery problems — documented on the Tavascan too from 30,000 km
The 12V supply issue is structurally inherent to MEB models and also affects the Tavascan (APP550). Workshop reports confirm the problem, which has been partially resolved through software updates.
Symptoms: 12V system warning; vehicle fails to start; all displays dark; fault messages after cold start - !! Heat pump CO2 refrigerant leak from 30,000 km
Leaking seals in the CO2 refrigerant circuit of the heat pump. Heating and AC fail. Repeated failures after repair documented.
Symptoms: Heating not working, AC without power, climate system error message

| Recall 69UN: passenger airbag life-threatening risk Same as ID.7: a faulty gas generator in the passenger airbag can rupture upon deployment. Life-threatening risk for occupants. Do not use passenger seat until free workshop repair is carried out. Symptoms: No recognisable warning symptom; danger only arises when airbag deploys | ||
| Recall 93MU: high-voltage battery fire risk Manufacturing defects in high-voltage battery modules can lead to thermal overload and fire risk. Until repaired: max. 80% charge level and no fast charging. Symptoms: No early warning symptom; elevated fire risk especially during charging | ||
| Recall: third-row seat too wide for seatbelts (NHTSA) NHTSA Recall (5,637 units): The standard third-row bench seat in the 7-seat ID.Buzz is too wide to accommodate two properly positioned lap-and-shoulder seatbelts, violating FMVSS 208. VW replaces the padded trim panel with a narrower unpadded version at no cost. | Low | |
| Recall: incorrect brake warning symbol in instrument cluster (2025) NHTSA Recall 2025: The instrument cluster in the ID.Buzz displays an incorrect brake warning symbol with the wrong color. Drivers could miss a serious brake fault because the indicator does not conform to FMVSS standards. A free software update corrects the display. | Low |
