VW ID.3

APP310 Elektrisch 204 hp Automatic Rear-wheel drive Hatchback 2020–2023
– Be Careful
Engine APP310 – Be Careful 10,810–28,900 €

MEB platform electric motor (rear-wheel drive), 150–220 kW system output. Mechanically robust, but software and HV system reliability in early model years (2020–2022) was below average. Heat pump (CO2 system) is failure-prone due to extreme operating pressures. 12V electrical system is a known weak point.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Lively EV

With 204 hp the ID.3 is genuinely fun — instant throttle response and good cornering dynamics thanks to rear-wheel drive. e-Golf successor on a proper level.

Engine Weaknesses 8

!! OTA software update bricks vehicle

Failed OTA updates (v3.0) can render the vehicle undriveable. Control units of different generations in the same vehicle lead to incompatibilities. Workshop stay of up to 10 days required. Further faults often follow after repair.

Symptoms: After OTA update the vehicle no longer starts or is completely locked. No fault message before failure — update ran in the background.

0–0 € from 25,000 km
!! HV battery cell drift and module failure

Individual battery cells deviate by more than 500 mV from neighbouring cells. The BMS then blocks charging and limits power. Module replacement as a spare part costs around 1,400–3,600 €. Early cases affected almost new vehicles.

Symptoms: Sudden range collapse, fault message in the drivetrain system, charging session stopped prematurely or refused. Vehicle still drives but with severely reduced power.

1,400–4,000 € from 15,000 km
!! 12V battery complete discharge

Early ID.3 models (MY 2020–2021) discharged their 12V battery overnight as control units did not switch off correctly. Vehicle completely dead in the morning. Software update from v2.0 onwards fixes the problem. VW replaces the battery free of charge on affected vehicles.

Symptoms: Vehicle does not start in the morning, no response at all from buttons or door handles. Orange warning triangle or 12V symbol visible in display before total failure.

0–200 € from 5,000 km
!! Heat pump CO2 refrigerant leak

The optional CO2 heat pump operates at up to 85 bar working pressure. Sealing rings and the compressor fail, often repeatedly. Typical pattern: first leak → sealing ring → failure recurs → compressor replacement. Repair costs up to 1,500 € outside warranty.

Symptoms: Air conditioning blows warm despite being active. Range drops by 20–30 km when AC is on. OBD diagnosis shows 'refrigerant loss'. No interior heating via heat pump in winter.

800–1,500 € from 30,000 km
!! On-board charger (AC charger) failed

The AC on-board charger fails; DC charging continues to work. Charging aborts after a few minutes or does not start at all. Replacement HV charger costs around 2,700 €. VW acknowledges this as a manufacturing defect; warranty handling is sometimes problematic.

Symptoms: AC charging (wallbox, public charger) starts briefly then aborts. DC fast charging works normally. Fault message 'charging interrupted' or no charge symbol in display.

2,000–3,000 € from 40,000 km
!! Drum brakes freeze in frost

The rear drum brakes on the ID.3 are barely applied mechanically due to regenerative braking. In frost and damp conditions the brake shoes freeze in the drum. Vehicle cannot be moved after parking. Rocking the car gently or rolling helps.

Symptoms: After parking in frost: vehicle will not move, electric motor locked. No warning sound or fault message. Occurs especially after overnight parking in damp and freezing conditions.

0–300 € from 20,000 km
! Infotainment crashes and reboots

The infotainment system freezes and repeatedly reboots, sometimes every few minutes. Mainly affects software versions up to 3.1. Causes: USB device conflict or display delamination. Workshop replaces the display unit under warranty.

Symptoms: Navigation freezes, screen spontaneously reboots — sometimes several times per journey. Climate control and driving assistants briefly unavailable.

0–800 € from 20,000 km
! HV battery degradation from fast charging

After around 300 DC fast-charging sessions a capacity loss of approx. 10% is measurable; the curve then stabilises. With pure fast charging around 50–55 kWh usable instead of 58 kWh. Cold charging without battery pre-conditioning accelerates degradation further.

Symptoms: Displayed range decreases permanently. OBD measurement shows state of health below 90%. Real-world range visibly below WLTP figure.

5,000–15,000 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 13

!! Other Recall 93MU: high-voltage battery fire risk

Certain ID.3 vehicles from production September 2023 to March 2024 were recalled due to a manufacturing defect in the HV battery modules (KBA 15998R). Defective cell structure can cause thermal overload and vehicle fire.

!! Electronics Software: crashes and infotainment failures

Early build years 2020–2021 suffer from frequent software crashes. Infotainment freezes or restarts; driver assistance systems drop out. Multiple workshop visits for software updates sometimes needed without a lasting fix.

0–500 €
!! Electronics 12V battery: deep discharge when standing

The 12V lead battery discharges during standing periods of more than 2–3 days due to the bus system failing to enter sleep mode. Software version 2.x did not fully resolve the problem. Significantly improved from software 3.0 with 'optimised battery charging'.

80–300 €
!! HVAC Heat pump: refrigerant loss and compressor failure

The CO2 high-pressure A/C compressor loses refrigerant through leaking O-rings. Failures occur in some cases after only a few months. Compressor replacement: approx. 1,000 €; full repair: approx. 1,500 €. All cases have been repaired under warranty.

1,000–1,500 €
!! Electronics Charge port: locking mechanism defective

The locking motor in the charge port fails: the cable cannot be removed, or charging fails at all outlets (CCS, Type 2). A misleading error message suggests a charger-side problem. Repair possible under warranty.

200–600 €
!! Brakes Emergency braking assist: false triggers from camera misinterpretation

Front Assist triggers falsely in certain situations: oncoming light, narrow roads with parked cars, and the absence of a centre line overwhelm the camera-radar system. The false trigger results in full emergency braking for approximately 1 second.

! Interior Interior: poor material quality in early build years

Early build years 2020–2021 suffer from low-quality plastics. High-gloss piano lacquer surfaces scratch quickly; seats and door trims feel below Golf standard. Build quality was improved from 2022.

50–300 €
! Electronics Indicator stalk: self-cancelling defective

The indicator stalk fails to self-cancel after turning. Replacement under warranty. The problem occurs sporadically and affects several build years 2020–2023. Known production defect according to the manufacturer.

50–200 €
! Brakes Rear drum brakes: rust and inspection faults

Rear drum brakes corrode faster than usual on electric vehicles due to infrequent mechanical braking. Below-average foot brake performance documented at roadworthiness inspection. Cleaning possible as a goodwill service.

150–400 € from 60,000 km
! Brakes Brake pedal: vague transition from regenerative to hydraulic braking

The brake pedal feels unintuitive under light braking: the eBKV distributes pedal travel between regeneration and the hydraulic brakes, creating a non-linear pressure point. Most noticeable at typical urban deceleration rates.

! Electronics Charge flap freezes in winter

The charge flap locking mechanism freezes at temperatures below 0°C in humid conditions. Despite pressing the button, the flap cannot be opened. VW recommends silicone spray as a preventive measure.

! Suspension Front axle rumbling / clattering (drop links)

Rumbling noises from the front axle over transverse ridges and bumps. Worn or loose anti-roll bar drop links are the common cause. VW has issued a technical bulletin (TPI 2067421) for certain production periods.

80–300 € from 30,000 km
! Electronics Keyless Entry: key not recognised

The Keyless Access system fails sporadically in cold and humid conditions. Doors can be unlocked with the button, but starting the vehicle fails. Particularly common with early software versions.
