Volvo EX30
Dual-motor variant of the EX30 with all-wheel drive and 315 kW system output on the SEA platform. Front and rear permanent magnet motors for 510 Nm torque and rapid acceleration. Same battery base as the single-motor variant but optimised thermal management.
Small EV, big fun
315 kW in the EX30 Twin Motor: 0–100 in 3.6 seconds. A lot of car for a little package — surprisingly thrilling.
Engine Weaknesses 4
A software fault in all 71,956 EX30s produced at that point caused the speedometer to switch to test mode after engine start. Second software recall since market launch. Fix available via OTA update (version 1.3.1).
Symptoms: Speedometer shows incorrect values after engine start or switches to test display
NHTSA recall (26V001) also affects the EX30 Twin Motor Performance. Battery cells from the SEA platform supplier can overheat and ignite at full charge. Interim solution: limit charging to max. 70% and charge outside garages.
Symptoms: No visible warning signs. Charge limit active. Smoke and heat development in extreme cases.
The EX30 Twin Motor also carries the 12V drain risk inherent to the SEA platform during standstill periods. Many active control units draw standby current continuously at rest. After more than 2 weeks without a charging connection the car may be unusable.
Symptoms: Car not ready to start after standing time, locking system unresponsive, all systems failed.
The EX30 suffers from Android infotainment problems similar to the XC40 Recharge: profile resets, unresponsive touchscreen, frequent app sign-outs, incorrect range displays. Many bugs can be resolved via OTA update.
Symptoms: App crashes, frozen screen, profile loss, incorrect displays
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
The EX30's automatic emergency braking system triggers without cause in some cases. Volvo is working on software updates; drivers reported alarming emergency stops with no obstacle present.
Recall for all 71,956 EX30 vehicles due to a software bug that puts the speedometer into test mode. OTA update fixes the problem; no workshop visit required.
European EX30 vehicles from the first delivery series showed black screens, unresponsive steering wheel buttons, and incorrect range displays. Software updates were provided; deliveries were temporarily suspended.
Key card access and the charging process show malfunctions in rain. Software errors with charge time limits and energy management are also known.
The EX30's single display (no driver display present) spontaneously reboots or goes black. Since all vehicle functions are controlled through this screen, the functional failure is severe — climate control, navigation, and camera all go offline.
Several EX30 owners report that the heating fails to reach the set cabin temperature quickly enough in very cold conditions. Base variants without a heat pump particularly suffer, as range also drops sharply at the same time.
The EX30's Android Automotive-based system occasionally loses its connection to Google services. App restart or re-login required. Frequently occurs after updates or when the vehicle is shared between multiple users.
On the EX30, a connection between heavy braking and brief audio dropout is known. The radio pauses or skips during regenerative braking, indicating interference between the recuperation system and the audio amplifier.
