Toyota Yaris
Extremely robust three-cylinder with timing chain. Virtually indestructible with regular oil changes. Occasional elevated oil consumption past 150,000 km. Ideal for city and short-run use.
Proven city runabout
Same three-cylinder as in the XP90, slightly updated chassis. Nimble and direct in urban traffic — on country roads the lack of power shows.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The water pump on the 1KR-FE has a limited service life and can fail prematurely. Several cases of failure at relatively low mileages have been documented.
Symptoms: Temperature gauge rising abnormally, coolant loss, squealing noise from the engine area
The water pump on the 1KR-FE tends to develop shaft seal leaks from around 50,000 km. The resulting coolant loss can lead to overheating if left unaddressed.
Symptoms: Coolant level drops with no visible leak, coloured deposits around the water pump, elevated engine temperature
With predominantly short-trip use the piston rings tend to stick, leading to oil consumption of up to 1 litre per 3,000 km. Particularly common on older, high-mileage vehicles.
Symptoms: Oil level drops noticeably between service intervals, blue smoke on cold start or under hard acceleration
Regardless of engine variant, oil loss around the timing chain cover is common on the Yaris and Aygo. The gasket ages and becomes porous, and oil drips onto the underbody.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the parked car, oil smell after driving, dropping oil level with no visible exhaust smoke
The upstream lambda sensor begins to fail at higher mileages and triggers fault code P0420. The fault can point to the sensor itself or to the catalytic converter.
Symptoms: Engine warning light, fault code P0420 in memory, slightly increased fuel consumption
Ignition coils on the 1KR-FE can fail prematurely, especially beyond 80,000 km. Contact corrosion from moisture and thermal stress promote individual coil failures.
Symptoms: Rough running, power loss, engine warning light flashing, misfires on cold start or in wet conditions
Vehicle Weaknesses 9
Rear brake discs rust quickly with infrequent use or short-trip driving. Brake pads bond to the disc, resulting in dragging brakes.
Strut top mounts wear at an above-average rate at higher mileages. Results in creaking noises when turning and degraded ride behaviour.
Starter batteries on 2012–2013 build years fail prematurely at a noticeably high rate. Particularly with short-trip use.
The rear wheel arch edges are prone to corrosion, particularly at the fold seam where moisture collects.
The front-mounted A/C condenser is damaged by stone chips and loses refrigerant.
The blower resistor in the heating/A/C system fails, leaving the cabin fan working on only one speed or not at all. Typical wear item from around 80,000 km.
The hose leading to the A/C condenser can develop leaks causing slow refrigerant loss. According to forum reports Toyota was aware of the issue; repair costs approx. €1,000–1,200.
The electric power steering (EPS) of the XP130 can feel too heavy or too indirect. ECU update or steering replacement required. The steering wheel sometimes fails to self-centre fully after cornering.
Hard plastics in the interior, especially the dashboard and door panels, tend to creak with age. At higher mileages wind noise from poorly fitting trim panels occurs.
