Toyota RAV4
Atkinson-cycle engine in the hybrid system with good basic reliability. Elevated oil consumption due to weak oil rings is the most common issue, especially with long oil change intervals. Prophylactic water pump replacement at higher mileage is advisable.
Front-drive hybrid of the old guard
145 kW 2.5 hybrid without all-wheel drive — sprightlier than the pure petrol engines, but older technology than the A25A.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Under-tensioned oil control rings can cause significant oil burning on the 2AR-FXE. The problem occurs noticeably more often with extended oil change intervals (>10,000 km).
Symptoms: Lower oil level between changes, bluish smoke after extended idle, oil top-up needed every 2,000–3,000 km
The water pump is prone to leaks from bearing or seal wear. Since the engine often stays cold in hybrid operation, the seals age faster through thermal cycling.
Symptoms: Pink coolant spots under the vehicle, dropping coolant level, bearing noise from the engine bay
The high-voltage battery loses capacity with age, reducing electric range and overall system efficiency. Inverter failures are also documented.
Symptoms: Reduced fuel efficiency, combustion engine starting more frequently, hybrid system warning lamp, reduced power output
The 2AR-FXE is known for elevated oil consumption due to prematurely worn oil control rings. Forum reports cite consumption of up to 0.4 litres per 1,000 km on vehicles over 120,000 km.
Symptoms: Noticeably increasing oil consumption, slight blue smoke under acceleration, regular top-ups required
From around 180,000 km the timing chain on the 2AR-FXE can stretch and push the tensioner to its limits. Forum posts describe start-up vibrations as an early sign of tensioner wear.
Symptoms: Start-up vibrations for 1–2 seconds on cold start, rattling from the engine bay on cranking
The 2AR-FXE can shudder briefly when the combustion engine automatically fires up from pure EV mode. This occurs especially at low temperatures and is linked to hybrid control strategy. Toyota has issued TSBs for software updates.
Symptoms: Noticeable jolting or shuddering on cold start during hybrid switchover, disappears after warm-up
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
Heated washer nozzles can allow salt water to enter the heating element through a faulty sealant, which can cause a short circuit and in the worst case a vehicle fire.
The parking brake on the RAV4 XA40 is a known weak point.
The 2.0-litre petrol engine can develop a leaking or seized water pump.
From around 100,000 km the steering rack develops a knocking noise, particularly on rough roads. Replacement with a used or new part is labour-intensive and costly.
Vehicles from salt-heavy regions show paint bubbling at wheel arches, sills and bonnet edges after 7–9 years. Thin factory paint promotes early corrosion.
Vehicles from model years 2014–2015 experienced excessive transmission oil loss due to a production defect. Both manual and automatic transmissions are affected.
The RAV4 XA40 is flagged above-average frequently for headlight issues at roadworthiness inspections.
The A/C condenser in the front bumper area is vulnerable to stone chip damage, causing slow refrigerant loss. The replacement part is costly; if caught early, soldering or sealing may suffice.
Like its predecessor the XA30, the XA40 steering rack cracks when manoeuvring or at full lock. The cause is universal joint wear. Mechanics rate it as a comfort issue.
The XA40 has poor sound insulation around the wheel arches and floor from the factory. After extended use or gravel roads the cabin becomes noticeably louder. Aftermarket sound deadening can be retrofitted.
