Toyota Prius XW30

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

5.0 / 5.0 · Based on 1 engine variants · How we rate

The third-gen Prius (2009–2015) made hybrids mainstream. But it carries one serious flaw — 2010–2012 models hardest hit.

EGR head gasket: Carbon buildup blows the head gasket. Cold-start “death rattle” is the warning sign. Repair: $1,800–$5,000. Avoid 2010–2012 without documented EGR cleaning. The 2015 got redesigned pistons + revised EGR.

Oil consumption (2ZR-FXE): Piston rings stick from ~150k km. Pre-2013: check oil every fill-up.

Inverter: NHTSA recalls 14V-053 + 20V-369. Out-of-warranty: $800–$3,400.

Best buy: 2014–2015. 2026 price: $7,000–$15,000.

Engine Overview

The Toyota Prius XW30 is available with one engine variant at 97 hp.

1.8L Hybrid · Petrol Hybrid· 136 PS
2009 2015

The world's best-selling hybrid drivetrain (Prius III/IV, Auris Hybrid). Atkinson cycle with E-CVT, extremely frugal and reliable. HV battery typically lasts past 250,000 km.

  • !! Oil consumption from thin oil control rings (TSB) from 120,000 km

Toyota has published two official TSBs for 2010–2014 Prius models: thin oil control rings wear and lead to elevated oil consumption. Secondary consequences include EGR blockage and head gasket failure.

Symptoms: Oil level noticeably dropping between changes, warning light; with severe consumption, EGR problems and elevated emissions as a consequence
    1,200–3,000 $
  • !! Premature water pump failure from 90,000 km

The water pump on the 2ZR-FXE Hybrid is designed with a limited service life and frequently fails before 100,000 km. On the Prius, failure can cause engine overheating.

Symptoms: Temperature gauge rising, coolant loss without external leak, overheating warning in the instrument cluster
    300–700 $
  • !! Coolant leak at EGR heat exchanger from 160,000 km

The EGR heat exchanger on the 2ZR-FXE can lose coolant. In combination with elevated oil consumption this can lead to head gasket failure.

Symptoms: Coolant loss without visible external leak, bubbling in the expansion tank, rising coolant temperature gauge
    500–1,500 $

Vehicle Weaknesses

Brake actuator pump failure — brake assist loss (US)

Prius XW30: the brake actuator pump (ABS/VSC module) can develop an internal leak, allowing nitrogen to enter the brake fluid circuit. This causes soft pedal, DTC C1391, and potential brake assist loss. Toyota extended warranty via ZG1/ZJB programs. Replacement costs $1,500–$3,500.

Symptoms: Soft brake pedal, VSC/ABS warning, C1391 code, increased stopping distance
from 161,000 km
High
!Brake Discs Rust from Regenerative Braking

The Prius XW30 uses regenerative braking heavily, meaning the mechanical brakes are rarely called upon.

Symptoms: Scraping and squealing when braking after standing.
from 80,000 km
Low
!Rear Brake Caliper Guide Pins Seize

The rear brake caliper guide pins on the XW30 corrode and seize because the rear brakes are rarely applied due to regenerative braking. Regular cleaning and greasing prevents the damage.

Symptoms: Grinding noise from one rear brake, uneven braking performance, rear brake disc glowing after extended driving
from 100,000 km
