Toyota Land Cruiser
Successor to the 1KD-FTV with improved efficiency and more power. Timing chain, common-rail with piezo injectors. Proven in the Land Cruiser and Hilux worldwide. Very robust and long-lived.
Strongest J150 diesel
150 kW with automatic — the most capable J150 Land Cruiser. Effortless on the motorway, able off-road.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The inlet and exhaust camshafts on the 1GD-FTV (Hilux, Fortuner, Prado up to 2020) wear excessively on the cam lobes due to a manufacturing defect. Toyota documented the fault in TSB 00162T-TME and supplied revised replacement parts.
Symptoms: Ticking from the cylinder head, power loss, increased fuel consumption
Internal EGR cooler leaks have been documented on the 1GD-FTV Prado and Hilux. Toyota Australia issued TSBs and provided goodwill coverage. Vehicles lose coolant internally with no visible external leak.
Symptoms: Dropping coolant level with no visible leak, white steam from the exhaust, milky emulsion in the oil
The high-pressure injection system on the 1GD-FTV is sensitive to fuel contamination and poor diesel quality. Faulty injectors lead to rough running.
Symptoms: Hesitation on acceleration; hard cold starting; knocking noises at idle; increased fuel consumption
From around 200,000 km the turbo on the 1GD-FTV shows bearing wear and sealing issues. Regular oil changes with 5W-30 extend service life.
Symptoms: Black smoke from the exhaust; power loss; turbo whine; oil in the intercooler hose
The 1GD-FTV is prone to interrupted DPF regeneration cycles with frequent short trips, leading to rapid soot loading and eventual DPF blockage. Moisture condensation causes sensors and filters to stick. Only long-distance driving or forced stationary regeneration helps.
Symptoms: DPF full warning, power loss, increased fuel consumption, limp mode
Injector seal issues are a discussed topic on the 1GD-FTV. Fuel leaks occur when injector seals are damaged or age out. The Toyota Relax Warranty covers injectors and EGR up to 250,000 km or 15 years.
Symptoms: Fuel smell in the engine bay, dropping diesel level, light deposits around injectors
Vehicle Weaknesses 18
The ladder frame can corrode at weld seams and cross members with intensive winter use.
A faulty pressure sensor in the ABS system causes a recurring brake disc warping symptom. The actual cause is fault code C1452. The complete brake actuator assembly costs approximately CHF 3,800.
Denso injectors in the 3.0 D-4D engines can fail at 100,000–150,000 km. Costs for a complete set are significant. Short-trip driving and poor fuel quality accelerate wear.

The J150 also shows rust on the underbody and frame components in wet or salty regions.
Brake calipers tend to seize through corrosion, particularly on off-road vehicles.
The automatic gearbox can develop jerky gear changes at high mileage.
The EGR valve on the 2.8 GD-FT engine can clog at 80,000–100,000 km, especially with short-trip driving. Leads to power loss and increased fuel consumption.
Front brake calipers can seize through moisture and salt corrosion. Pistons no longer move freely, causing uneven brake pad wear.
Sills and wheel arch edges rust on vehicles from salt-belt regions. No factory cavity protection from the factory. Professional treatment with Mike Sanders or Timemax recommended.

The rear shock absorbers lose fluid and become ineffective, worsened by frequent off-road use.
With off-road use and higher mileage, the joints in the front upper control arm wear out. Play and noises when braking and turning are the symptoms.

The ultrasonic parking sensors in the bumper fail due to moisture or stone chip damage.
