Fun Factor? Decent

Design SUV in glide mode

90 kW 1.8 hybrid — CVT rubber-band effect softened by the low centre of gravity. Efficient and quiet, driving fun stays minimal.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Oil consumption from thin oil control rings (TSB)

Toyota has published two official TSBs for 2010–2014 Prius models: thin oil control rings wear and lead to elevated oil consumption. Secondary consequences include EGR blockage and head gasket failure.

Symptoms: Oil level noticeably dropping between changes, warning light; with severe consumption, EGR problems and elevated emissions as a consequence

1,200–3,000 € from 120,000 km
!! Premature water pump failure

The water pump on the 2ZR-FXE Hybrid is designed with a limited service life and frequently fails before 100,000 km. On the Prius, failure can cause engine overheating.

Symptoms: Temperature gauge rising, coolant loss without external leak, overheating warning in the instrument cluster

300–700 € from 90,000 km
!! Coolant leak at EGR heat exchanger

The EGR heat exchanger on the 2ZR-FXE can lose coolant. In combination with elevated oil consumption this can lead to head gasket failure.

Symptoms: Coolant loss without visible external leak, bubbling in the expansion tank, rising coolant temperature gauge

500–1,500 € from 160,000 km
!! Timing chain elongation at high mileage

The timing chain on the 2ZR-FXE can show wear at mileages above 180,000 km, especially when oil change intervals have not been maintained. Short-trip use accelerates wear.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start that settles once oil pressure builds. Persistent rattling indicates advanced wear.

500–1,200 € from 180,000 km
!! Hybrid system fault (P314a)

Fault code P314a (inverter coolant pump speed signal) is a known issue on the 2ZR-FXE. The cause is typically a broken wire to the inverter cooling pump.

Symptoms: Warning 'Check hybrid system', reduced engine power, vehicle operates in restricted mode only

200–1,500 € from 100,000 km
! Valve stem seals hardened

On older 2ZR-FXE engines the valve stem seals can harden and become brittle over time, causing slight oil consumption. Occurs mainly on vehicles with extended periods of inactivity.

Symptoms: Slight blue smoke on cold start, low but measurable oil consumption that eases off once the engine is warm.

300–700 € from 150,000 km
! Spark plugs worn prematurely

Rough running during transitions between EV and combustion mode has been attributed to spark plug wear. Denso plugs last considerably longer than aftermarket alternatives.

Symptoms: Engine stutters or misfires during EV-to-combustion switchover, rough running especially when cold

80–200 € from 90,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 18

!! Other Recall: Fuel tank cracking on hybrid models

On hybrid models from 2016–2017 cracks can develop in the fuel tank.

0–0 €
!! Other Recall: Rear wheel bearing fixings loose

C-HR AX10 vehicles built June to August 2018 were recalled due to loose wheel bearing retaining bolts.

0–0 €
!! Other Front wheel bearing recall

Faulty front-axle wheel bearings can detach. Official recall for certain production periods.

0–0 €
!! Other 1.2T ignition coils faulty (8NR-FTS)

Ignition coils of the 8NR-FTS turbo engine fail on early build years before April 2018 and trigger limp mode. Toyota replaced all four coils as a service action.

150–450 € from 40,000 km
!! Rust Suspension components rust without underbody protection

Toyota delivers the C-HR without factory underbody corrosion protection. Suspension components and rear wishbones show significant corrosion on vehicles from salt-belt regions even under two years old.

150–800 € from 40,000 km
!! Other Recall: High-pressure fuel pump wears prematurely

Fuel leak due to premature wear of the high-pressure fuel pump on vehicles produced November 2017 to April 2021. Toyota recalled affected vehicles for pump inspection and replacement if necessary.

! Rust Early rust formation on the floorpan

The C-HR AX10 develops typical model-specific rust blistering on the floorpan at an early stage.

100–500 €
! Electronics Ignition coil failure on 1.2 turbo

The 1.2L turbo engine (8NR-FTS) has isolated ignition coil failures leading to misfires.

50–150 € from 60,000 km
! Electronics 1.2T direct injection: carbon deposits

The 1.2T direct-injection petrol engine is prone to carbon deposits on intake valves and injectors at higher mileages. Fuel system cleaner at regular service intervals is recommended.

200–600 € from 80,000 km
! Electronics Hybrid: 12V starter battery drains

On the hybrid model the 12V starter battery can go flat after extended periods of inactivity, as the hybrid system does not always charge it sufficiently. More common on vehicles that are rarely used.

100–250 € from 40,000 km

i Rust Underbody panels corrode

Metal underbody panels and heat shields corrode and detach.

100–300 € from 50,000 km
i Interior Poor all-round visibility due to body design

The coupé body design of the C-HR severely restricts all-round visibility. A very small rear window and thick C-pillars make reversing difficult. Parking sensors are almost mandatory.
