Toyota has published two official TSBs for 2010–2014 Prius models: thin oil control rings wear and lead to elevated oil consumption. Secondary consequences include EGR blockage and head gasket failure.
Symptoms: Oil level noticeably dropping between changes, warning light; with severe consumption, EGR problems and elevated emissions as a consequence
The water pump on the 2ZR-FXE Hybrid is designed with a limited service life and frequently fails before 100,000 km. On the Prius, failure can cause engine overheating.
Symptoms: Temperature gauge rising, coolant loss without external leak, overheating warning in the instrument cluster
The EGR heat exchanger on the 2ZR-FXE can lose coolant. In combination with elevated oil consumption this can lead to head gasket failure.
Symptoms: Coolant loss without visible external leak, bubbling in the expansion tank, rising coolant temperature gauge
The timing chain on the 2ZR-FXE can show wear at mileages above 180,000 km, especially when oil change intervals have not been maintained. Short-trip use accelerates wear.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start that settles once oil pressure builds. Persistent rattling indicates advanced wear.
Fault code P314a (inverter coolant pump speed signal) is a known issue on the 2ZR-FXE. The cause is typically a broken wire to the inverter cooling pump.
Symptoms: Warning 'Check hybrid system', reduced engine power, vehicle operates in restricted mode only
On older 2ZR-FXE engines the valve stem seals can harden and become brittle over time, causing slight oil consumption. Occurs mainly on vehicles with extended periods of inactivity.
Symptoms: Slight blue smoke on cold start, low but measurable oil consumption that eases off once the engine is warm.
Rough running during transitions between EV and combustion mode has been attributed to spark plug wear. Denso plugs last considerably longer than aftermarket alternatives.
Symptoms: Engine stutters or misfires during EV-to-combustion switchover, rough running especially when cold

On hybrid models from 2016–2017 cracks can develop in the fuel tank.
C-HR AX10 vehicles built June to August 2018 were recalled due to loose wheel bearing retaining bolts.
