Tesla Model Y Juniper

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 2 engine variants · How we rate

With the Juniper facelift in early 2025, Tesla brought the Highland philosophy to the world's best-selling SUV. The most striking visual change is the full-width light bar front and rear, which makes the Model Y look more modern and wider and clearly sets it apart from the plain predecessor. Inside, the Juniper adopts the familiar Highland updates: a touchscreen for rear passengers, ventilated front seats, considerably more insulation and acoustic glass for a quieter cabin. Ride comfort improved noticeably thanks to a reworked chassis with retuned dampers and bushings — the often-criticized harsh response of the first Model Y is softened without making the body wallowy. Range rose slightly thanks to finer aerodynamics and a more efficient drivetrain, by a few percent depending on the variant. Charging performance and thermal management were also optimized. As with the Model 3 Highland, many controls move to the screen and steering wheel; anyone who dislikes the Model 3's capacitive controls should try one out first here too. As the Juniper is still very new as of 2026, there is little long-term data on reliability and wear. So far the known issues are mainly early software matters: occasional bugs on the new displays, connectivity hiccups and fine-tuning of driver-assist systems, which Tesla addresses via over-the-air updates. On the build side, as always, check the panel gaps and door seals on early production runs closely. As a used car the Juniper is still expensive and scarce in 2026, mostly young demo or lease returns. Anyone who waits until more cars reach the market and initial long-term experience is available buys with less risk. Overall the Juniper is a mature, more comfortable step for an already very practical electric SUV.

Upper control arm ball joint creaking is the #1 complaint from 40-60k miles. Heat pump on 2020-2022 had cold-weather failures (recall). Battery degradation tracks Model 3 Long Range almost identically.

  • !! 12V battery failure (2020-2021) from 100,000 km

    Affects 2020-2021 lead-acid 12V equipped cars. Same failure as Model 3. Li-ion 12V from late 2021.

    Symptoms: Car completely dead
    120–450 $

Early Model Y production showed rear drive unit failures requiring complete replacement. Reports of failures under 10,000 miles. Covered under 8-year warranty. Out-of-warranty: $6,000-10,000.

Symptoms: Sudden loss of rear power, error messages, reduced performance mode
    6,000–10,000 $
  • !! Drive unit bearing whine from 160,000 km

Same drive unit as Model 3 LR. Higher vehicle weight adds bearing load. Whine typically 80-100k miles.

Symptoms: Whining or milling from motors
    400–10,000 $
