Suzuki Grand Vitara JT-FL

Larger-displacement variant of the J20A with 2.4 litres in the Grand Vitara JT from 2008 onwards. Generally a robust engine, but blocks produced before 2010 are considered weaker and prone to cracks under the exhaust manifold. Significantly improved block from 2010 onwards.

  J24B engine blocks produced before 2010 can crack under the exhaust manifold. The defect is not repairable — the only solution is a block swap to the post-2010 version or a new replacement engine.

  Symptoms: Coolant loss without visible external leak, exhaust gases in the cooling system, overheating

• !! Timing chain tensioner worn from 200,000 km

  From approximately 200,000 km the timing chain on the J24B can stretch or the tensioner can weaken. As it is an interference engine, a chain failure risks severe engine damage from bent valves.

  Symptoms: Engine rattles on cold start; in later stages a persistent metallic noise

• ! Oil loss through seals from 130,000 km

  The J24B is prone to oil losses at the cam cover gasket, sump gasket, and front and rear crankshaft seals.
