Skoda Fabia
EA211 base engine at 63 kW/86 hp. Early 2014 build years were affected by a camshaft adjuster defect that could cause timing belt failure. Revised components from November 2014. Recommended to shorten service interval to 15,000 km.
TSI base in the estate
90 hp TSI in the Fabia estate: the turbo helps with overtaking, adequate for daily use.
Engine Weaknesses 3
On engines from 02–10/2014 production, camshaft adjuster mounting bolts can come loose and cause the timing belt to snap. Identifiable by mark 'AL' or 'P' on the timing cover.
Symptoms: Timing belt snaps without warning, engine stops, will not restart. In the worst case engine damage from valve contact.
Older 1.2 TSI before 2012 build year use a roller chain with elevated wear risk. Manufacturing residues in the oil accelerate chain wear. Extended oil change intervals (long-life 25,000 km) encourage damage.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start that worsens over time. With chain skip: rough running and engine check light.
Petrol direct injection without port injection causes carbon deposits on intake valves and in the intake tract. Short-trip driving worsens the problem. Leads to power loss and elevated consumption.
Symptoms: Juddering at low revs, poorer cold starting, noticeable power loss over time.
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
Fault in the gas generator of the driver airbag causes uncontrolled deployment on activation and detachment of metal fragments that can injure vehicle occupants. Recall action for vehicles of build years 2014–2017.
Faulty engine ECU software activates the ESP warning light and puts the vehicle into limp mode. Resolvable via a paid software update as part of a service action. Mainly early NJ build years affected.
The infotainment display shows individual pixel failures or completely dark areas. Problem mainly occurs on vehicles over about 5 years old and is due to deteriorating display connections.
Concealed rust forms under stone-chip protection on the sills behind the wheel housings and at the tops of the A-pillars. Dirt accumulates behind plastic inserts and promotes corrosion. Relevant from about 8–10 years and 100,000 km.
The front strut top mounts (spring/shock absorber bearings) wear from around 60,000 km and cause creaking when steering at standstill. More common on vehicles in urban traffic.
The air conditioning evaporator tends to harbour bacteria, causing a musty smell when switching on the air conditioning. Regular disinfection is required.
The rear drum brakes tend to squeal, especially in wet conditions and after prolonged standing. Corrosion on the brake shoes is a common cause.
Reports & Tests
The third-generation Fabia passes the MOT inspection with average results overall. Braking system and lighting remain the most frequent fault categories.
The Fabia is one of the most reliable superminis in the breakdown statistics. The breakdown rate is below the class average across all relevant model years.
