Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Lively enough for everyday fun

The Leon eTSI 110 with DSG drives more agilely than expected: the mild hybrid boost on pull-away feels fresher than a pure petrol, and the FR chassis remains sporty without punishing. Acoustically discreet throughout, precise in corners — for a compact car daily grind a genuinely satisfying choice.

Engine Weaknesses 9

!! Timing Belt Maintenance Underestimated

The EA211 uses a timing belt instead of a chain. Many owners underestimate the replacement interval. A broken belt on this interference engine causes valve damage and total engine failure.

Symptoms: No direct warning symptom — breakage occurs without warning, engine will not start.

440–990 $ from 150,000 km
!! Wet Timing Belt Running in Oil Bath

Like all EA211 TSI variants, the DKJA timing belt runs in an oil bath. Strictly adhering to oil change intervals is mandatory. Early replacement recommended for short-trip use.

Symptoms: Rattling, engine warning light, rough engine running

440–990 $ from 90,000 km
!! Leaking Injectors

In the 1.0 TSI with OPF, injectors can exceed permissible leak rates, causing emissions issues. VW carried out injector replacements as a warranty measure.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, increased fuel consumption, rough idle

330–880 $ from 80,000 km
!! Fuel Pump Failure

The low-pressure fuel pump can fail prematurely, causing starting problems, power loss, or irregular fuel supply. Typical for EA211 three-cylinder engines at medium mileages.

Symptoms: Difficult starting, power loss under load, rough engine running, occasional stalling.

330–770 $ from 90,000 km
!! Increased Oil Consumption Due to Piston Rings

The EA211 evo is especially prone to increased oil consumption of up to 0.5 l/1,000 km in early production years. The cause is coked or worn piston rings and a faulty crankcase ventilation.

Symptoms: Oil level drops noticeably between services, slight blue smoke under high load, oil pressure warning if oil level neglected

880–2,750 $ from 60,000 km
! Ignition Coil Failure

The 1.0 TFSI three-cylinder shows ignition coil failures manifesting as rough running, misfires, and engine roughness, especially with a cold engine. Affected coils should be replaced as a set.

Symptoms: Rough running when accelerating, rough idle, engine misfires in cold conditions, engine warning light.

90–280 $ from 60,000 km
! Carbon Deposits on Intake Valves

Direct injection without port injection causes soot deposits on the intake valves. Impairs cylinder filling and power, especially after frequent short-trip use.

Symptoms: Power loss, disturbed smooth idle, increased consumption at same driving profile.

170–440 $ from 80,000 km
! OPF Clogging in Short-Trip Operation

The gasoline particulate filter clogs under predominantly urban short-trip driving as regeneration temperature is not regularly reached. Results in power loss, increased consumption, and fault codes.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, reduced power, increased fuel consumption, occasional limp mode

330–1,650 $ from 80,000 km
! Intake Tract Carbon Build-up and EGR Valve

With pure direct injection and no port injection, no fuel washes the intake valves. Residues from EGR and crankcase ventilation accumulate on valves and in the intake tract.

Symptoms: Rough running at low rpm, delayed throttle response during acceleration, rough idle, increased fuel consumption

220–660 $ from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 8

!! Other Recall plug-in hybrid: High-voltage battery fire risk 2020–2022

On the plug-in hybrid (2020–2022) the high-voltage battery is insufficiently secured. Short circuits can trigger a fire. Free retrofit at the dealer.

0–0 $
!! Gearbox DSG: Clutch wear in city driving

The DSG gearbox shows increased clutch wear under heavy city use and when towing. Regular gearbox oil changes are essential.

550–2,750 $ from 80,000 km
! Electronics Infotainment MIB3: Software bugs and system crashes 2020–2022

The MIB3 infotainment system shows software bugs such as screen crashes and camera failures. Software updates fix most of the problems.

0–880 $ from 30,000 km
! Suspension Springs and shock absorbers worn prematurely

Coil springs and dampers show more defects than the overall average even at the first roadworthiness inspection. Seat fitted some examples with leaky shock absorbers that tend to seep early.

330–990 $ from 70,000 km
! Electronics Reversing camera remains black 2020–2022

The reversing camera no longer shows an image, usually caused by a defective control unit or cable break at the connector. Software version 1896 partially resolves the issue.

170–660 $ from 40,000 km
! Electronics Front low-beam flagged at roadworthiness inspection

Front lighting is rated as somewhat critical in TÜV reports. LED control units can fail, and headlight lenses show premature fogging.

110–880 $ from 60,000 km
! Gearbox Jerking on pull-away with eTSI mild hybrid

The 1.0/1.5 eTSI with DSG shows a noticeable jerk on pull-away, particularly when the engine is warm. The 48V battery requires 2,000–3,000 km to calibrate.

0–220 $ from 20,000 km
i Body Moisture in the rear lights

Rear lights mist up internally or show visible water droplets. Leaking seals or micro-cracks in the plastic housing.

0–440 $ from 30,000 km

Reports & Tests

TÜV AUTO BILD TÜV-Report 2024-08
Above average

The fourth Leon generation is the most reliable of the range and shows hardly any mechanical defects at the roadworthiness inspection. Complaints are limited to occasional issues with driver assistance systems and DSG clutch comfort.
