Engine CUSB – Be Careful 4,820–17,710 $

EA288 1.4 TDI three-cylinder common-rail with 90 hp in the Ibiza IV facelift. EGR valve tends to coke up; check DPF condition with short-trip driving. Efficient common-rail diesel.

Fun Factor? Decent

Frugal estate diesel

In the Ibiza ST the 1.4 TDI holds its own well. Enough power for daily use with minimal fuel consumption.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Oil pump chain — snap and engine damage

The EA288 1.4 TDI has a maintenance-free oil pump chain that can snap at high mileages. Without oil pressure a total engine seizure is possible within seconds.

Symptoms: Oil pressure warning light illuminates suddenly while driving, engine noise, engine stalls

1,650–5,500 $ from 170,000 km
!! EGR valve wear / coking

The 1.4 TDI CUSA is prone to EGR valve and EGR cooler sooting in predominantly short-trip use. DPF regeneration is disrupted as a result. Cleaning or replacement required.

Symptoms: Power loss, black exhaust smoke, engine warning, elevated consumption

220–880 $ from 80,000 km
!! Diesel particulate filter clogged

In frequent short-trip use the 1.4 TDI DPF cannot regenerate fully and clogs. Cleaning costs approx. €200–500, replacement €1,000–2,000.

Symptoms: DPF warning, limp mode, power reduction

220–2,200 $ from 100,000 km
!! EGR valve coking and failure

The EA288 EGR valve is prone to soot deposits and coking in short-trip use. Particularly elevated failure risk after the emissions update.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, power loss, black smoke on acceleration, limp mode

330–880 $ from 90,000 km
!! DPF clogging in short-trip use

The particulate filter does not regenerate fully on short trips. Accumulating soot loading leads to rising exhaust back pressure and ultimately clogging.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, power restriction, frequent regeneration attempts, elevated consumption

440–1,320 $ from 100,000 km
!! Turbocharger boost pressure problems (P0299)

Fault code P0299 appears with worn or defective turbochargers. Engine enters limp mode, power drops above 3,000 rpm.

Symptoms: Power loss above 3,000 rpm, limp mode, fault code P0299, whistling from the turbo

880–2,200 $ from 120,000 km
! EA288 emissions scandal — software recall

The EA288 was subject to an officially mandated software recall for thermal window shut-off devices. The update can exacerbate EGR problems.

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Rust Rust: Sills, wings, and bonnet

Despite full galvanising, the 6J develops rust on sills, wings, and the bonnet. The exhaust system rusts through within a few years.

330–1,650 $ from 100,000 km
! Suspension Springs and dampers: Above-average wear

Springs and shock absorbers show above-average wear. On cars over 10 years old, steering joints add to the list of concerns.

220–770 $ from 100,000 km
! Brakes Brake discs: Increased wear

Brake discs and pads wear faster than expected. Buyers should factor brake costs into their budget planning.

170–550 $ from 70,000 km
! HVAC Cabin blower: Motor or resistor failure

The cabin blower motor fails or only runs on some speed settings. Often just the blower resistor is faulty, which is an inexpensive fix. Full motor replacement costs around €60–400 depending on the source.

90–440 $ from 80,000 km
! Rust Bonnet: Rust at the folded edge

The Ibiza 6J bonnet develops rust in the folded edge and at the front edge transition from around 10 years. Most susceptible with no underbody protection and in salt-treated regions.

220–880 $ from 100,000 km
i Electronics Rear lights: Moisture ingress

Moisture penetrates the rear lights, causing corrosion of the bulb holders and function failure.

60–330 $ from 80,000 km
i Interior Centre armrest: Creaking and rattling

The centre armrest creaks and rattles in cold temperatures and on poor road surfaces. Cheap plastic clips work loose over time. Easy to fix but annoying.

0–110 $ from 50,000 km

Reports & Tests

TÜV AUTO BILD TÜV-Report 2024-09
Average

Springs and dampers are flagged above average even early on, and steering joints and brake discs deteriorate in older examples. Misaligned low-beam headlights and drivetrain oil leaks also appear more frequently than average.
