Seat Ibiza
66 kW EA288 1.4 TDI in the Ibiza 6J facelift with good consumption. EGR valve and DPF are typical weak points; short-trip use is detrimental to the DPF. Good choice for regular long-distance drivers.
Ibiza TDI — frugal everyday diesel
With 66 kW the 1.4 TDI in the Ibiza 6J is a reasonable city diesel. Torque arrives early and gives the small car a surprisingly punchy character in the lower rev range. For high-mileage city drivers an efficient if not exciting choice.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The EA288 uses an oil-bath belt for the oil pump drive. Rubber wear leads to particle abrasion in the oil, which can clog the oil pump and oil passages. No official change interval — only check via oil condition at oil changes.
Symptoms: Black rubber crumbles in engine oil, elevated oil viscosity, oil pressure warning (if oil pump clogs)
The CXMA 1.4 TDI 66 kW, like all small diesels in short-trip use, is prone to EGR valve seizing from soot deposits. Power loss and black smoke are the signs.
Symptoms: Power loss, black exhaust smoke, engine warning, poor cold start
The 1.4 TDI CXMA is particularly susceptible to DPF clogging due to its small displacement. Short trips prevent full regeneration. Run the vehicle on a motorway regularly.
Symptoms: DPF warning light, limp mode, power reduction
The EA288 1.6 TDI EGR cooler can crack or clog from soot deposits. Coolant enters the exhaust system. Without maintenance engine damage from water hammer in the intake manifold is possible.
Symptoms: White smoke, coolant loss, power loss, fault code P0401 (EGR flow), rough idle
On EA288 engines produced up to September 2014, coolant temperatures can rise to up to 130°C. Documented under technical note 2041955. Can occur at low mileage.
Symptoms: Coolant temperature warning light, temperature gauge in the red zone, overheating smell
In urban and short-trip use the automatic DPF regeneration cannot complete; the filter clogs. Professional cleaning or replacement required.
Symptoms: DPF warning lamp, pronounced power loss, elevated fuel consumption, engine running rougher than usual
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
Despite full galvanising, the 6J develops rust on sills, wings, and the bonnet. The exhaust system rusts through within a few years.
Springs and shock absorbers show above-average wear. On cars over 10 years old, steering joints add to the list of concerns.
Brake discs and pads wear faster than expected. Buyers should factor brake costs into their budget planning.
The cabin blower motor fails or only runs on some speed settings. Often just the blower resistor is faulty, which is an inexpensive fix. Full motor replacement costs around €60–400 depending on the source.
The Ibiza 6J bonnet develops rust in the folded edge and at the front edge transition from around 10 years. Most susceptible with no underbody protection and in salt-treated regions.
Moisture penetrates the rear lights, causing corrosion of the bulb holders and function failure.
The centre armrest creaks and rattles in cold temperatures and on poor road surfaces. Cheap plastic clips work loose over time. Easy to fix but annoying.
Reports & Tests
Springs and dampers are flagged above average even early on, and steering joints and brake discs deteriorate in older examples. Misaligned low-beam headlights and drivetrain oil leaks also appear more frequently than average.
