Engine CBZB ✖ Stay Away! 7,350–21,620 $

77 kW EA111 TSI, most popular petrol engine in the Ibiza 6J. Timing chain stretch is a critical weak point — check chain tensioner before buying. Turbocharger damage and oil consumption possible on older units.

Fun Factor? Decent

Good compromise in the small car

With 77 kW the 1.2 TSI in the Ibiza 6J is noticeably livelier than the weaker variants. Fun on country roads; the gearchange feels pleasantly short. Not a sports car, but a competent everyday car with appropriate power.

Engine Weaknesses 9

!! Timing chain stretch EA111 1.2 TSI (critical)

The CBZB (1.2 TSI, 105 PS) timing chain stretches prematurely from manufacturing defects from as early as 30,000–40,000 km. Defective tensioners and guides can lead to engine damage. Particularly susceptible before 2011.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start (first 5 seconds), engine check light, rough idle

880–2,750 $ from 60,000 km
!! Turbocharger damage

The CBZB turbocharger is susceptible to premature wear, especially with oil consumption or insufficient oil changes. Whistling and power loss are early signs.

Symptoms: Whistling, power loss, elevated oil consumption, bluish smoke

880–2,750 $ from 100,000 km
!! Timing chain stretch and chain tensioner 2009–2011

Engines before October 2011 (CBZA/CBZB/CBZC) are inherently prone to timing chain stretch from faulty tensioners and worn guide rails. Damage possible from 30,000 km.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start, rough idle, in extreme cases engine failure from chain jump.

880–1,650 $ from 60,000 km
!! Turbocharger seizing (first generation)

The first-generation 1.2 TSI (EA111) turbocharger is inherently prone to seizing. Skoda was aware of the issue internally and performed a workshop action (24W6).

Symptoms: EPC warning light, sudden power loss, engine briefly recovers after restart, then fails again.

1,100–1,980 $ from 70,000 km
!! Elevated oil consumption

The 1.2 TSI CBZB consumes above-average amounts of oil, often caused by worn piston rings or the turbocharger. Check oil level between service intervals.

Symptoms: Oil consumption >0.5 L/1,000 km, bluish exhaust smoke, falling oil level

550–2,200 $ from 80,000 km
!! Sporadic misfires on all cylinders

Known weak point: sporadic misfires on all cylinders, often traced to defective ignition coils. The problem is common in the Audi A1 with CBZB and well documented.

Symptoms: Juddering, engine stuttering, engine check light flashing, power drop under load, cold-start problems

110–440 $ from 70,000 km
!! Elevated oil consumption

Overly thin oil scraper rings lead to elevated oil consumption. The problem occurs earlier if chain damage has caused oil starvation episodes, as this accelerates wear on cylinder walls and rings.

Symptoms: Falling oil level, bluish smoke, frequent top-up required, oil consumption above 0.5 l/1,000 km

1,650–4,400 $ from 80,000 km
!! Carbon deposits on intake valves

Direct injection without fuel wash of the intake valves leads to carbon deposits. Worse combustion, elevated consumption and power loss with short-trip use.

Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss at mid-range rpm, elevated fuel consumption.

170–440 $ from 100,000 km
! Crankcase ventilation defective

The 1.2 TSI crankcase ventilation is prone to wear at higher mileages. Leaking diaphragms or hoses cause false air ingestion and elevated oil consumption.

Symptoms: Rough idle, lean mixture fault code, oil mist, elevated oil consumption

60–280 $ from 90,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Rust Rust: Sills, wings, and bonnet

Despite full galvanising, the 6J develops rust on sills, wings, and the bonnet. The exhaust system rusts through within a few years.

330–1,650 $ from 100,000 km
! Suspension Springs and dampers: Above-average wear

Springs and shock absorbers show above-average wear. On cars over 10 years old, steering joints add to the list of concerns.

220–770 $ from 100,000 km
! Brakes Brake discs: Increased wear

Brake discs and pads wear faster than expected. Buyers should factor brake costs into their budget planning.

170–550 $ from 70,000 km
! HVAC Cabin blower: Motor or resistor failure

The cabin blower motor fails or only runs on some speed settings. Often just the blower resistor is faulty, which is an inexpensive fix. Full motor replacement costs around €60–400 depending on the source.

90–440 $ from 80,000 km
! Rust Bonnet: Rust at the folded edge

The Ibiza 6J bonnet develops rust in the folded edge and at the front edge transition from around 10 years. Most susceptible with no underbody protection and in salt-treated regions.

220–880 $ from 100,000 km
i Electronics Rear lights: Moisture ingress

Moisture penetrates the rear lights, causing corrosion of the bulb holders and function failure.

60–330 $ from 80,000 km
i Interior Centre armrest: Creaking and rattling

The centre armrest creaks and rattles in cold temperatures and on poor road surfaces. Cheap plastic clips work loose over time. Easy to fix but annoying.

0–110 $ from 50,000 km

Reports & Tests

TÜV AUTO BILD TÜV-Report 2024-09
Average

Springs and dampers are flagged above average even early on, and steering joints and brake discs deteriorate in older examples. Misaligned low-beam headlights and drivetrain oil leaks also appear more frequently than average.
