Porsche GTS
Biturbo V6 with hot-V configuration for the GTS variant.
Macan GTS — the ultimate compact SUV
The Macan GTS with the 2.9 biturbo V6 and Sport Chrono is the sharpest compact SUV on the market: sport exhaust, lowered 20 mm, stiffer springs, GTS-specific PDK calibration. On country roads you forget you're in an SUV. The EA839 V6 sounds raw and sporty, the PDK fires off gears in Sport Plus mode. For anyone wanting a compact SUV with genuine sports car character.
Engine Weaknesses 8
EA839-based 2.9T biturbo shows isolated cases of premature timing chain wear. Regular oil changes with high-quality oil are essential.
Symptoms: Metallic rattle on cold start, check engine light, rough running
Audi extended the warranty for EA839 piston cracks; broken pistons lead to cylinder bore scoring and engine damage. Alusil block without liners. Particularly affects short-trip cold operation.
Symptoms: Knocking noise similar to diesel clatter on cold start, rough engine operation, elevated oil consumption.
The 2.9L EA839 biturbo shares the plastic coolant line problem with the 3.0T variants. Leaks from 80,000 km documented.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating, coolant level warning light.
Factory-overtorqued aluminium bolts on the timing cover break; the cover no longer seals. Oil loss at the front near the radiator. Repair often requires engine removal.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the vehicle front right, oil film on the radiator hose, oil level warning.
The EA839 2.9T PCV vent hose has the same failure mechanism as the 3.0T. Audi TSB 2020 confirms the problem. If the hose fails, oil can ignite at the turbines.
Symptoms: Oil mist in the engine bay, oil loss, potential burning smell.
On the 2.9T biturbo, both wastegate actuators can develop play or stick. With a biturbo setup, diagnosis and replacement effort is doubled.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling, P2563 fault code, uneven boost build-up.
EA839 uses direct injection only; intake valve deposits build up to 80,000–120,000 km. Walnut blasting cleaning required.
Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss under partial load, rough cold-start behaviour.
Six ignition coils in the 2.9T biturbo are under elevated heat stress. Individual failures accumulate — replacing all six simultaneously is more cost-effective.
Symptoms: Misfires, rough running, engine warning light.
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Transfer case (PTM) fails due to water ingress into the gear oil. Revised several times, but still documented on 2014-2021 models.
PDK dual-clutch gearbox shudders on pull-away and manoeuvring. Gearbox oil change and software update can help; clutch replacement sometimes needed.
Rear axle subframe develops surface rust after 8-10 years with year-round use. May require replacement of the entire subframe.
A/C refrigerant line splits in the engine bay. Complete refrigerant loss, section of pipe rattles.
Alternator voltage regulator fault or short circuit causes charging problems. Fuse F30 blows repeatedly.
Macan wheel bearings wear prematurely with spirited use and poor roads. Rear axle particularly affected.
Macan brake pads and discs wear faster than on lighter Porsche models due to the high vehicle weight.
When turning to full lock combined with braking, the drivetrain produces an audible crack. Porsche describes it as design-inherent load relief.
