Cayenne GTS — the sportiest of its kind

The Cayenne GTS with the 4.0 biturbo V8 is the best argument against sport SUVs from BMW and Mercedes: 460 hp, rear-axle steering, PASM sport suspension, and a V8 sound no straight-six can replicate. Surprisingly agile for 2.2 tonnes on country roads — the active roll stabilisation works constantly, the steering is remarkably precise for an SUV. No sports car replacement, but the sportiest SUV without paying an AMG premium.

!! Timing chain premature wear

Same EA839 architecture as the DGRC. Timing chain can wear prematurely if oil change intervals are neglected.

Symptoms: Timing chain rattle on cold start, rough engine operation

!! EA839 piston crack and cylinder bore scoring

Audi extended the warranty for EA839 piston cracks; broken pistons lead to cylinder bore scoring and engine damage. Alusil block without liners. Particularly affects short-trip cold operation.

Symptoms: Knocking noise similar to diesel clatter on cold start, rough engine operation, elevated oil consumption.

!! Coolant line under the intake plenum

The 2.9T EA839 in the Macan Turbo/S FL shares the coolant line problem. Plastic hose under the intake plenum becomes brittle. Extensive disassembly required.

Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating, coolant warning light.

!! Timing cover bolts break — oil loss

Factory-overtorqued aluminium bolts on the timing cover break; the cover no longer seals. Oil loss at the front near the radiator. Repair often requires engine removal.

Symptoms: Oil spots under the vehicle front right, oil film on the radiator hose, oil level warning.

!! PCV hose leak EA839

The EA839 PCV vent hose fails through internal check valves. Crankcase pressure builds up, oil can leak at the turbines. Audi TSB 2020 known for related engines.

Symptoms: Oil mist in the engine bay, oil loss, burning smell.

!! Wastegate actuator malfunction biturbo

Wastegate actuators on the 2.9T DGR can stick or develop play. P2563 code and metallic rattling on cold start are typical.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling, P2563 fault code, uneven boost.

! Intake valve carbon buildup (direct injection)

Direct injection without port injection leaves deposits on intake valves. From 80,000–120,000 km stumbling appears under partial load. Cleaning via walnut blasting.

Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss under load, rough cold-start behaviour.

! Ignition coil failure biturbo V6

Six ignition coils under elevated thermal load — a single failure signals general ageing. Complete replacement of all six recommended.

Transfer case (PTM) fails due to water ingress into the gear oil. Revised several times, but still documented on 2014-2021 models.
