Porsche Cayman 981(981c)

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 3 engine variants · How we rate

The Cayman 981 is the hardtop counterpart to the Boxster 981 — and for many enthusiasts the better sports car. The fixed roof makes the Cayman stiffer, more precise, and even more dynamic than the already excellent Boxster. Built between 2013 and 2016, it shares all engines and most weaknesses with the Boxster.

The 2.7L (195 kW) in the base Cayman and the 3.4L (239 kW) in the Cayman S — both naturally aspirated boxers with the unmistakable Porsche sound. The Cayman GT4 with the 3.8L from the 911 Carrera S (283 kW) is a legend: the first Cayman officially faster than the base 911. Manual gearbox was standard on the GT4.

Vehicle weaknesses mirror the Boxster: coolant lines, AC compressor, and brakes/suspension under spirited use. The absent convertible top eliminates an entire weakness category compared to the Boxster.

The 981 Cayman is considered one of the dynamically best Porsches ever made — lighter, more direct, and more honest than the contemporary 991 Carrera. A genuine insider tip on the used market, especially the Cayman S with PDK or manual. The GT4 is already a collector's piece.

Engine Overview

The Porsche Cayman 981 is available with 4 engine variants — from 265 to 385 hp.

The 2.7-litre DFI of the 981 generation is lighter and more efficient than all predecessors — Porsche rebuilt the entire boxer architecture. No IMS, more modern materials, less weight: technically carefree. The sound is quieter than the 987.1 due to DFI injection and new emissions standards — described as "refined, but less emotional". Anyone seeking a tool for the drive gets the most technically sophisticated base engine of the range here. Anyone seeking noise-makers invests in the GTS or the open variant.

  • !! Cylinder bore scoring from 80,000 km

Alusil cylinder bores can score due to faulty injectors or cold-start abuse. Engine can seize completely. Repair costs €10,000–20,000.

Symptoms: Elevated oil consumption, blue smoke on cold start, cylinder wall scoring visible on borescope
    10,000–20,000 $
  • !! High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure from 120,000 km

DFI high-pressure fuel pump fails and is often on back-order for months. Poor cold start is an early warning sign.

Symptoms: Engine only starts on the third attempt, amber engine warning light, P1024/P1026
    1,200–2,500 $
  • !! Integrated thermostat-water pump unit worn from 90,000 km

The integrated thermostat-water pump module on the MA1 wears out in normal use. Failure causes overheating. Preventive replacement at 90,000 km recommended.

Symptoms: Temperature fluctuations, occasional overheat warning, coolant loss, steam from under the engine cover
    700–1,400 $

The 3.8-litre is directly derived from the 911 S and transplanted into the mid-engine context of the open variant and the mid-engine coupé in GT4 trim. The result is in a class of its own: a high-revving naturally aspirated engine with a sound described as "goosebump-inducing" — in the open variant directly behind the driver's head even more uncompromising than in the GT4. The engine revs silky-smooth and willingly to the limit and lives off high revs. No IMS, modern DFI block. The combination of 3.8 naturally aspirated, mid-engine position and manual gearbox is described as "the purist Porsche experience par excellence" of its era.

  • !! Bore scoring on Alusil cylinders from 80,000 km

Alusil cylinder bores can score due to faulty injectors or cold-start abuse. Engine can seize. Repair cost €10,000–20,000.

Symptoms: Increased oil consumption, blue smoke on cold start, bore scoring visible on borescope
    10,000–20,000 $
  • !! VVT adjuster sprocket bolt shear under load

Variable valve timing adjuster sprocket bolts can shear under high load. A bolt failure causes bent valves on one bank and total engine damage. Confirmed via NHTSA complaint for 9A1 engine variants.

Symptoms: Sudden engine damage under high load, bent valves on one cylinder bank, check engine light, limp mode
    3,000–15,000 $
  • !! High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure from 120,000 km

The DFI high-pressure fuel pump fails and is often unavailable for months. Poor cold starting is the early symptom.

Symptoms: Engine starts only on the third attempt, yellow engine warning light, P1024/P1026

GTS · Petrol· 340 PS

The 3.4-litre DFI of the 981 powers the S, GTS and the entry versions of the "more than normal" class. VarioCam Plus on intake and exhaust, direct throttle response, characteristic boxer sound — more muted than the M96 era, but with a sport exhaust on a completely different level. The 981 with this engine is described as "one of the last truly analogue sports cars" — before the 718 generation brought turbo engines. No IMS, no purchase stress, high reliability. The GTS variant is considered the "sweet spot" of this range's entire mid-engine history.

The combined thermostat-water pump unit on the MA1.23 Cayman S wears with mileage. Preventive replacement at 85,000 km recommended as failure causes overheating.

Symptoms: Temperature fluctuations, overheat warning, faint coolant smell, erratic temperature gauge

Which Porsche Cayman 981 engine is the most fun? +
The {code} ({displacement}) offers the most driving fun in the Porsche Cayman 981 — rated: "Legendary!". {description} The Cayman GT4 981 is the fulfilment of the mid-engine concept: 3.8-litre NA engine from the 911, GT3 brakes, mechanical LSD — and manual as the only option. On circuit: telepathic, captivating, another level. But on back roads there is little to do — the NA engine wants to be revved past 5,000 rpm, and there in third gear you are already well past legal speeds. Permanently driving below the car's potential. For twisty roads with gearwork, take the GTS 981 — shorter ratios, less power, but the rev limit arrives at speeds that still make sense.
