Porsche Diesel
The 3.0L V6 TDI from the Audi/VW group arrived in the Cayenne in 2009 and is technically a proven unit: high torque from low revs, significantly more economical than any petrol engine in this SUV, and long-distance capable. The sporting pretension is limited β the diesel-typical rev behaviour suits the comfortable Cayenne, but anyone wanting sporty driving is better off with the V8. EGR valve and timing chain are the known risk areas, both manageable through preventive maintenance. A solid engine for the Cayenne as a touring and family vehicle.
Long-distance diesel
240 hp diesel with plenty of torque and low fuel consumption β pragmatic, long-distance capable, without sporting ambition. The V6 TDI diesel character suits the comfortable Cayenne better than the sporty one. The most economical engine in the 955 range for regular long-distance drivers. Not an exciting engine, but an honest one.
Engine Weaknesses 7
3.0L V6 TDI Cayenne 9PA: turbo bearing damage at high mileage. Cause is often oil starvation or degraded oil.
Symptoms: Power loss, whistling turbo noise, blue smoke
The 3.0 TDI shares its timing chain issues with the Audi Q7/VW Touareg diesel. The timing chain stretches and causes engine rattling. The unfavourable position at the gearbox end significantly increases repair complexity.
Symptoms: Chain rattling noise on cold start, rough engine running, check engine light, code P0016
3.0L V6 TDI Cayenne 9PA: timing chain wear at high mileage. Engine removal required for repair.
Symptoms: Timing chain rattle on cold start, camshaft position fault code, power loss
The EGR valve carbons up and jams, clogging the intake. The primary cause is short-trip operation in which no complete burn-off of deposits takes place.
Symptoms: Smoke under acceleration, power loss, check engine light, increased fuel consumption
The DPF does not regenerate fully in pure city driving. Soot accumulates until the filter overloads. A DPF replacement at a dealer costs around β¬4,000; cleaning attempts often β¬500β1,000.
Symptoms: Warning: 'check particulate filter', power drop, increased fuel consumption, engine warning light
Injector seals fail and produce a metallic ticking sound as well as a diesel smell. The 3.0 TDI shares its injector design with Audi/VW, where this issue is also well known.
Symptoms: Metallic ticking or hissing from the engine bay, diesel smell, rough running, cylinder imbalance fault codes
EGR valve carbons up with frequent short-trip driving. Power loss and increased emissions.
Symptoms: Power loss, black smoke, check engine light
Vehicle Weaknesses 9
Air suspension compressor fails through overloading. Most common cause: leaking air bags force the compressor to run continuously. Vehicle sags.
The Cayenne 955 is prone to rust on sills, door bottom edges and rear wings. Stone chips accelerate corrosion considerably. Cavity sealing recommended.
Electronic steering column lock (ELV) engages after a deeply discharged battery. Vehicle can neither be started nor steered.
Design fault with the sunroof drains. Blockage leads to water ingress into the interior. Regular cleaning of the drain channels required.
Propshaft centre bearing wears and causes vibrations. Simple repair, but if ignored, secondary gearbox damage can follow.
Mechanical parking brake seizes in cold weather or corrodes from disuse. Brake cables stretch and need adjustment.
A/C compressor and interior blower fail through age and overheating. Condenser and compressor often need to be replaced together.
Tailgate gas struts lose pressure over time. The tailgate only opens halfway or falls down onto your head while loading.
Plastic trims and foam parts become brittle, fade and creak. Door cards and headliner fabric come loose.
