Porsche GTS
The 3.0L biturbo V6 in the Cayenne 92A facelift is a revised version of the familiar base engine β slightly more efficient and refined than the early versions. Technically solid, without notable outliers up or down. For a second-generation Cayenne this is a maintenance-friendly base engine.
GTS β the Cayenne Porsche drivers buy
The Cayenne GTS is the golden mean of the range: sportier than the S, lighter than the Turbo, with sport exhaust and tauter calibration. The V8 (or biturbo V6 from the 9YA) revs more willingly than in the S, the sport suspension keeps the 2.2-tonner impressively flat. Nothing in this class feels less like an SUV. On twisty country roads superior to the BMW X5 M β less power, more precision.
Engine Weaknesses 6
GTS shares the transfer case with all 92A Cayennes. Porsche extended the warranty to 10 years for 2011β2014 vehicles. Outside warranty, replacement is approx. 4,500β6,000 β¬.
Symptoms: Shuddering/vibration when pulling away from corners, slip sensation, all-wheel drive warning
The timing chain tensioner loses tension at high mileage. The chain elongates and cam timing shifts. Regular oil changes reduce the risk.
Symptoms: Timing chain rattle on cold start, rough engine operation, check engine light
Biturbo V6 Cayenne 92A S/GTS: heat aging hardens the O-rings on the turbo oil feed lines. Oil enters the intercooler.
Symptoms: Blue smoke under acceleration, oil loss, reduced boost pressure
CXZA shares its timing chain kit with the CURA. Chain stretch is typical for this V6 turbo architecture at mileages above 160,000 km.
Symptoms: Timing chain rattle on cold start, disappears after warm-up, P0016
The GTS engine's higher boost pressure stresses the AOS membrane more than the S variant. Oil enters the intake tract and, with sustained damage, also reaches the turbos.
Symptoms: Elevated oil consumption, oil in intake hoses, engine warning light
Pure direct injection without port injection leads to oil carbon deposits on the intake valves. Power loss and increased fuel consumption.
Symptoms: Poor throttle response, rough idle, slight power loss
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
When turning to full lock, power steering assistance drops out briefly several times. Power steering pump overloaded or valve block faulty.
Level sensors and air suspension compressor fail through wear. Improved over the 955, but still a cost factor.
Blocked sunroof drains lead to water ingress. If the Bose sound system is fitted, the subwoofer in the boot can be damaged.
PDK gearbox and transfer case develop leaks. Oil loss at seals and shaft seals requires regular monitoring.
Rear doors develop rust at the door fold, often only 3-5 years after first registration. Porsche acknowledged the defects under warranty.
Climate control heats to maximum when A/C is switched off. Temperature sensor delivers invalid values. No fault codes stored.
