Porsche GT2 RS

M97.70S 3.6L Turbo 620 hp Manual Rear-wheel drive CoupΓ© 2010–2012
– Be Careful
Engine M97.70S – Be Careful 6,550–25,450 €

The M97.70S of the 997 GT2 is the Mezger at the peak of turbo development: 390 kW standard, boosted to 456 kW in the GT2 RS with an aggressive turbo setup. The GT2 RS verdict: "encouragingly unhinged", brutal, demanding, not for everyone on the road. The turbo thrust comes massively and demands concentration β€” no AWD, with a rear axle that must manage maximum torque. Sound: turbo-dominant, less smoky than a naturally aspirated engine, but with the Mezger base character. Reliability: top, as long as the engine isn't abused by extreme tuning. The 997 GT2 RS is a "too much for the street" car β€” fascinating, intimidating, and an absolute rarity that wants to be treated accordingly.

Fun Factor? Legendary!

Legalised insanity β€” professionals only

The 997 GT2 RS with 456 kW is the most extreme thing Porsche put on the road in the 997 era β€” "encouragingly unhinged" and "legalised insanity" (press quotes). The verdict: "too much for the street" for most drivers. No all-wheel drive, maximum boost, no compromise. The car is a rarity and values have exploded accordingly. An experience beyond any normal sports car β€” for everyone else there is the GT3 RS.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Plastic coolant pipes at oil cooler fracture

Plastic coolant pipes at the oil cooler connection become brittle and crack at the O-ring seat. Engine removal is required for repair. Aftermarket steel retrofit kits recommended.

Symptoms: Sudden coolant loss, steam from engine bay, overheating warning

2,500–4,500 € from 80,000 km
!! VTG linkage seized

Variable turbine geometry (VTG) linkage corrodes and seizes. Boost pressure is no longer regulated correctly. Common on low-mileage or rarely-driven cars.

Symptoms: Fluctuating boost pressure, power loss, check engine light

500–3,500 € from 60,000 km
! Hydraulic engine mount leaking or collapsed

Hydraulic engine mounts lose their damping fluid over time and collapse. Engine rocks under load changes. Particularly noticeable from 150,000 km onward.

Symptoms: Dull thud on take-off, vibrations at idle, play in the drivetrain

200–600 € from 150,000 km
! Exhaust manifold crack from thermal cycling

Exhaust manifolds crack at weld seams due to thermal cycling. Because the catalytic converter is integrated in the mid-engine layout, replacement usually requires a new cat as well.

Symptoms: Ticking noise when engine is warm, exhaust smell in cabin, black soot marks

800–3,500 € from 80,000 km
! Knock sensor failure β€” P0327/P0332

Knock sensors fail due to housing cracks or wiring corrosion. Sensor is poorly accessible, located behind the air filter and A/C compressor.

Symptoms: Check engine light, fault codes P0327 or P0332, engine runs normally without power loss

100–350 € from 80,000 km
! Camshaft VVT solenoid failure

Camshaft variable valve timing solenoid fails. Fault P0018 (cam phasing) appears on cold start and clears once the engine is warm.

Symptoms: Engine warning on cold start, P0018, slightly rough initial idle

150–600 € from 90,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Suspension Damper Piston Rod Corrosion

Damper piston rods corrode due to stone damage and moisture. Relevant for roadworthiness testing, as damper function is compromised.

800–2,200 € from 80,000 km
!! Body Water Ingress from Blocked Drains

Drain channels around the windscreen and luggage area clog with leaves and dirt. Water runs into the interior.

50–800 € from 60,000 km
!! Other Recall: Exhaust Tailpipe Can Detach

On 997 models from 2004–2008 the exhaust tailpipe can detach due to inadequate weld quality. Recall with free repair.

0–0 € from 60,000 km
!! Rust Underbody and Sill Rust

The 997 without underbody covers is susceptible to salt corrosion. Suspension components, springs, exhaust brackets and coolant hoses rust.

500–5,000 € from 80,000 km
!! HVAC AC Condensers Leaking with Age

Both AC condensers become leaky through stone damage and corrosion after 12–15 years. Refrigerant loss leads to complete AC failure.

600–2,500 € from 120,000 km
!! Steering Power Steering Leaking at High-Pressure Hoses

High-pressure hoses and steering rack seals become leaky after 10+ years. Hoses should be replaced preventively.

300–1,500 € from 100,000 km
! Interior Seat Heaters Fail on Both Sides

After a battery failure or replacement, the 997 loses the configuration that seat heating is installed. Recoding via diagnostics resolves the issue.

50–400 € from 80,000 km
