Updated THP with 165 hp and improved timing chain. Significantly more reliable than predecessor EP6DT.
SUV with adequate power
In the new 3008 P84 the 165 hp of the revised THP is adequately dimensioned. The SUV moves fluidly in traffic, overtaking manoeuvres succeed without fuss. The automatic comes as standard and suits the 3008's comfort-focused SUV character.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The EP6CDTX has a reinforced chain and revised tensioner (white guide rails instead of brown). Nevertheless, chain stretch occurs from around 100,000 km — less frequently than on EP6DT/DTS, but still relevant.
Symptoms: Slight rattle on cold start until oil pressure builds, valve timing fault in OBD, rough idle after warm restart
The EP6CDTX also uses direct injection exclusively. Oil mist and EGR gases cause stubborn carbon deposits on the intake valves. Cleaning every 60,000–80,000 km is recommended.
Symptoms: Gradual power loss, increased fuel consumption, hesitation at low revs, occasional misfires
The high-pressure pump of the EP6CDTX gradually loses its internal hydraulic oil over time. It wears faster with frequent short-trip use and in hot climates. Fault code P0087 is typical.
Symptoms: Power loss under load, engine stumbling at high revs, starting problems, MIL with fuel pressure fault
The electric water pump with integrated thermostat is the same design as the EP6DT/DTS and remains a wear item. A leak or pump failure creates overheating risk.
Symptoms: Coolant temperature rises, coolant loss without visible external leak, overheating warning, heater goes cold
THP165/200 high-pressure pumps lose oil pressure through worn seals. Intermittent power drops at 1,800–3,500 rpm; fuel pressure drops below 40 bar. Always replace the seal kit during repair.
Symptoms: Sporadic power drops under acceleration, unburnt fuel smell, engine warning light
The solenoid valve for variable cam timing fails on THP engines, causing power loss and fault codes. More common on pre-2014 models.
Symptoms: Rough idle, engine warning light, power loss at mid-range revs
Vehicle Weaknesses 9
On 3008 models produced from April 2016 to August 2017 the fuel line can chafe against the aerodynamic cover of the fuel tank. The line can be damaged, allowing fuel to escape and ignite.
A potentially defective bolt connection on the front left or right ball joint bracket can lead to a bolt fracturing. This significantly impairs driving stability.
The 1.2 PureTech engine with wet-belt has been recalled multiple times. Poor maintenance and short-trip use cause the oil additives to break down prematurely, degrading the belt. Belt failure leads to engine damage. Affects model years 2017–2020.
Electrical problems are a frequent weak point on the 3008 P84. Failed touchscreens, defective sensors and central locking failures are regularly reported.
The EAT8 automatic gearbox in the 3008 P84 can display unusual shift behaviour in 2nd and 3rd gear. Jerky gear changes, delayed shifts and gearbox warning messages are reported.
The 3008 P84 suffers from disturbances in the ABS and ESP systems where warning lights illuminate without any clear mechanical fault. Wheel speed sensors or ECU faults are often the cause.
From around 80,000–120,000 km, shock absorbers and wishbone rubber bushes on the 3008 P84 show wear. The vehicle weight (approx. 1,600 kg) loads suspension components more heavily than a regular car. Oil traces on shock absorbers are a wear indicator.
The A/C condenser on the 3008 P84 is mounted at the front and is vulnerable to stone chip damage. A damaged condenser causes refrigerant loss. Stone chip damage is often not covered by insurance.
Plastic trim panels and decorative strips in the 3008 P84 interior can start rattling. The dashboard, door trim panels and centre console are particularly affected.
