Peugeot 107
Toyota 1.0L three-cylinder with timing chain. Identical to Toyota Aygo/Citroën C1. Extremely reliable and economical.
Toyota reliability in a PSA suit
The 1KR-FE Toyota three-cylinder in the 107/108 is a textbook example of reliability. 69 hp is more than enough for a city car — light, nimble, economical. On the motorway it gets loud and slow, but that's not what the car was built for. Perfect for city commuters and new drivers.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The engine control unit on the 1KR-FE in the Peugeot 107 fails more often than on other engines. Consequences include no-start, limp mode or running on only three cylinders. Repair of the original ECU is possible and saves up to 80% versus a new unit. New unit cost: 1,000–2,000 Euro.
Symptoms: Engine won't start or starts poorly, runs on three cylinders, warning lights on, vehicle enters limp mode
The timing chain of the 1KR-FE tends to stretch from around 100,000 km. The chain tensioner can no longer compensate for the wear, leading to a ticking noise and shifted valve timing.
Symptoms: Ticking/rattling on cold start, rough idle, slight power loss
All pre-2009 models have a weak clutch. From the 2009 facelift, the reinforced clutch from the Yaris was fitted. The clutch needs regular adjustment via cable.
Symptoms: Clutch slips, pedal engages very high, frequent adjustment needed, squealing
With age, worn piston rings and valve stem seals can lead to increased oil consumption. Regular oil level checks recommended, especially from 150,000 km.
Symptoms: Slight oil consumption, bluish smoke on cold start, oil level warning
Around 10–15% of owners report misfires caused by faulty spark plugs or ignition coils. On a three-cylinder engine, misfires are particularly pronounced.
Symptoms: Heavy juddering, engine management light flashing, significant power loss, rough running
The water pump on the Toyota 1KR-FE engine tends to develop leaks from as early as 50,000 km. Coolant loss is documented. Replace at the same time as the timing belt.
Symptoms: Dropping coolant level, coolant puddle under the engine, overheating warning
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
Aging door and boot seals along with blocked condensate drain channels lead to water ingress in the footwells and boot. A well-known issue on older examples, promoting mould growth and electronics damage.
The water pump on the 1KR-FE three-cylinder can start leaking from around 50,000 km, causing a slow coolant loss. Ignoring it risks overheating damage.
Sills rust under the trim on older 107 models; the actual extent is often much greater than visible. Wheel arches and underbody also affected. Repair is costly because the metal is thin.
Front strut top mounts and shock absorbers wear noticeably with frequent city use. Rubber bushes and track rod ends are also typical wear items.
The downstream lambda sensor frequently fails, triggering the engine warning light with fault code P0420. Mainly affects older vehicles from around 100,000 km.
The battery on the Peugeot 107 discharges quickly with frequent short journeys. Idle speed control valve problems can contribute to discharge. The alternator fails at higher mileages.
Door check straps break frequently because Peugeot uses low-quality items. The failure can cause cracks in the sheet metal mount. Replacement requires removing the door trim panel. Replacement part around 30–50 euros.
