A13DTE 1.3L CDTI 75 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2011–2014 Custom Search
– Be Careful
Engine A13DTE – Be Careful 4,850–17,630 $

Successor to the Z13DTH with slightly higher output (95 hp), structurally closely related to the Fiat MultiJet. The timing chain was not fundamentally improved and remains the biggest concern. DPF makes the engine particularly sensitive to short-trip use.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Entry-level diesel

55 kW in the Corsa D is a struggle on the motorway. Mainly sold to fleet customers.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Timing chain: stretch and rattle

Like its predecessor Z13DTH, the timing chain stretches with contaminated oil and extended change intervals. Cold-start rattle is the first warning sign; chain jump or breakage causes immediate engine failure.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling from the timing chain area on cold start for 2–5 seconds, fading at operating temperature. Power loss, increased consumption.

660–2,200 $ from 150,000 km
!! Turbocharger: bearing failure from oil starvation

The turbocharger suffers bearing wear when oil supply is compromised by dirty oil or extended intervals. A non-return valve (55563097) for approx. €50 can prevent oil leaking into the intake.

Symptoms: Whistling or squealing noise on load changes, oil spots at the rear, oil mist in intake, power loss, blue smoke from exhaust.

440–1,650 $ from 130,000 km
!! DPF clogging on short-trip use

The DPF clogs on frequent short trips as full regeneration cannot occur. Fault code P160D. New OEM DPF costs up to €2,000; cleaning approx. 25% of that.

Symptoms: Power loss, increased fuel consumption, black smoke clouds on acceleration, limp mode, engine management light.

440–2,200 $ from 100,000 km
!! Oil cooler gasket leak

The gasket between oil cooler and engine block deteriorates over time, causing significant oil loss below the oil filter housing. Oil drips onto the A/C compressor unit and contaminates the underbody shield.

Symptoms: Oil seepage below oil filter housing, oil puddles under the vehicle, dropping oil level, oil pressure warning light in advanced cases, fault code P0520.

220–550 $ from 150,000 km
! EGR valve: carbon build-up

The EGR valve carbons up especially on short trips and causes poor starting and power loss. Replacement or cleaning totals approx. €200–400.

Symptoms: Hesitation from cold, misfires, engine management light, sporadic throttle response, rough idle.

170–550 $ from 90,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 13

!! Steering Electric power steering EPS defective

The electric power steering of the Corsa D fails due to defective control unit electronics (fault code C0550). Broken solder joints and faulty capacitors caused by thermal cycling are typical causes.

330–1,650 $ from 90,000 km
!! Brakes Pedal assembly plastic bearing deforms 2007–2009

On model years 2007–2009, a plastic bearing in the pedal assembly deforms due to footwell heater heat. The brake pedal won't return and the brakes drag permanently.

220–660 $ from 50,000 km
!! Suspension Coil springs break

Coil springs on the Corsa D break frequently, especially on the front axle. According to TÜV statistics this is one of the most commonly flagged faults. Broken springs can damage tyres and bodywork.

110–390 $ from 80,000 km
!! Gearbox M32 gearbox bearing failure

Turbodiesels and stronger petrol engines in the Corsa D use the failure-prone M32 six-speed gearbox. Bearing failure through over-preload leads to gearbox failure, recognisable by gear lever wobble.

880–2,420 $ from 120,000 km
!! Rust Rust on rear axle carrier

The Corsa D rear axle carrier is covered by Opel's 10-year corrosion warranty but still rusts heavily. Severe attack makes the vehicle irreparable and unfit for the MOT.

550–1,980 $ from 120,000 km
!! Brakes Brake pads seized

The brake caliper guides on the Corsa D get dirty and stick. Pads seize and grind permanently on the disc — leading to premature wear and overheating.

90–440 $ from 70,000 km
! Rust Bonnet internal rust (water trap) 2010–2012

On model years 2010–2012, the bonnet is missing a drain hole. Water collects in the fold and leads to internal corrosion. Opel officially acknowledged the problem.

110–550 $ from 60,000 km
! Suspension Suspension springs and wheel bearings worn prematurely

On the Corsa D, suspension springs and wheel bearings wear comparatively early. Anti-roll bar links and ball joints are also known weak points.

170–550 $ from 90,000 km
! HVAC A/C condenser leaking

The Corsa D A/C condenser gets damaged by stone chips or the A/C hoses become porous. Refrigerant loss and compressor magnetic clutch failure are common follow-on problems.

280–880 $ from 100,000 km
! Body Water ingress into footwell from blocked drains

Blocked drain channels in the front area cause rainwater to back up and enter the cabin through body gaps. A faulty rear wiper seal additionally causes water ingress into the boot.

60–330 $ from 80,000 km
! Electronics Electric window regulator driver's side defective

The window regulator motor or guide rail on the driver's side fails. Window can no longer be closed or drops back uncontrolled. Common from 80,000 km.

90–330 $ from 85,000 km
! Cooling Cooling fan pre-resistor defective

The cooling fan pre-resistor burns out. The fan then either won't start or runs permanently at maximum speed. Risk of overheating in city driving without functioning fan control.

60–220 $ from 90,000 km
i Interior Dashboard and vent louvers rattle

Vent louver blades, interior mirror mount and dashboard trim pieces in the Corsa D rattle over bumps. Loose clips and temperature-related plastic expansion are the causes.

0–90 $ from 60,000 km

Reports & Tests

TÜV AUTO BILD TÜV-Report 2024-11
Below average

Oil loss occurs about twice as often as average and leads to higher follow-up costs on older vehicles. Axle springs and steering joints are flagged above average. From the third MOT onwards, rear light and indicator failures are added.
