Nissan Versa N18
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
## Nissan Versa N18 (2020–present)
With the third generation, Nissan meaningfully upgraded the Versa without losing its core identity: it remains the cheapest new car you can buy in the United States. The styling looks more grown-up, build quality improved, and modern driver-assistance systems come standard — a big leap over the bare-bones N17. Even so, it's still a budget commuter built on simple mechanicals.
The powertrain is the revised HR16DE, now making 122 horsepower. The naturally aspirated four is, as before, solid, durable, and uncomplicated — timing chain, no forced induction, undemanding. Buyers expecting performance are in the wrong place; buyers wanting reliable, economical transportation get a decent engine.
The Jatco CVT remains the main concern. Even in the N18 generation, drivers report shudder and judder, especially at low speeds and when cold. The problems are less dramatic than on the N17, but the continuously variable transmission still deserves close attention when buying.
New and typical for the modern generation are electronic gremlins. The automatic emergency braking (AEB) activates on some cars with no detectable obstacle — phantom braking that can be dangerous in traffic. The infotainment system freezes or lags. Mechanically, the front wheel bearings still fail early, and the brake rotors warp prematurely. The HVAC blend door can fail — a clicking noise behind the dash or loss of temperature on one side are the giveaways.
Buying advice: Get the CVT up to temperature and watch for shudder; a settlement claim may apply to newer years too, so check by VIN. A test drive should be long enough to provoke phantom braking and infotainment dropouts. Verify software level and completed recalls by VIN.
Bottom line: The N18 is the better, more modern Versa — safer, better equipped, with a stronger engine. Its weaknesses shift from mechanical toward electronics and the CVT. The low price remains the main selling point, but the transmission risk hasn't gone away. With clean history and completed recalls, it's a sensible, affordable daily driver.

Engine Overview
The Nissan Versa N18 is available with 2 engine variants — from 109 to 122 hp.
Proven 1.6L naturally aspirated engine with timing chain. Robust and low-maintenance, but underpowered for heavier models.
- !! Timing chain stretched from 140,000 km
The timing chain can stretch prematurely when oil level is low. The chain tensioner loses oil pressure and can no longer maintain chain tension. Result: chain skip and possible engine damage.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling from the engine on cold start that may or may not subside after warm-up. Check engine light may illuminate. - !! Elevated oil consumption from piston rings from 140,000 km
The HR16DE is prone to elevated oil consumption at higher mileage due to worn piston rings or failed valve stem seals. Regular top-ups become necessary.
Symptoms: Blue smoke from exhaust, dropping oil level between change intervals, oil top-up required. - ! Valve clearances require regular adjustment from 60,000 km
The HR16DE does not have hydraulic tappets. Valve clearances must be adjusted manually every 60,000 km. If neglected, wear occurs on camshaft and rocker arms.
Symptoms: Ticking or tapping noise from the valve train, especially at idle and on a cold engine.

Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic emergency braking triggers without obstacle — N18 The N18 Versa's Forward Emergency Braking system generates false-positive detections, triggering abrupt hard stops. Nissan has not issued a recall. Class action lawsuits were filed; a federal appeals court decertified the national class in 2024. Symptoms: Sudden hard braking with no obstacle present; 'Front Radar Unavailable' dashboard message; system self-deactivates; particularly frequent on bridges and in rain from 15,000 km | Medium | |
| Infotainment system freezes or becomes unresponsive The 8-inch touchscreen in the N18 Versa occasionally freezes or fails to respond to inputs. Holding the power button to force-reboot the system usually provides a temporary fix. Nissan offers software updates. Symptoms: Touchscreen becomes unresponsive; display shows garbled graphics or freezes on boot screen; Bluetooth drops mid-drive from 2,400 km | Low |
