Nissan Sentra B18

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.0 / 5.0 · Based on 1 engine variants · How we rate

The Nissan Sentra B18 (2020–2024) is the eighth generation of the compact and a big leap over its dowdy predecessor: a lower, sportier design, a more upscale interior, and the new 2.0-liter four-cylinder MR20DD with 152 hp. As a modern car under five years old, it's well-equipped, safe, and attractively positioned against the Corolla and Civic — but it shares its predecessors' core inheritance. Because the B18 also relies on the Jatco CVT, which still tends to jerk and hesitate. Anyone who values long-term reliability should watch the transmission closely and test it warm. There are also two safety-critical recalls: the tie rod can bend (NHTSA campaign 23V581), affecting steering, and an electric power steering (EPS sensor) failure on 2021 models. Both must be confirmed completed by VIN before purchase. Typical too is the automatic emergency braking that triggers for no reason (phantom braking). Other reported issues: touchscreen ghost-touch, a freezing infotainment screen, large-area paint peeling, starting problems with the check-engine light, and a clunking steering rack. Buying advice: test the CVT warm and at length for jerking and hesitation. Confirm both recalls — tie rod (23V581) and EPS (2021) — completed by VIN. Watch how the emergency braking behaves and listen for any clunk from the steering. Check the paint for peeling, and test the touchscreen and start behavior. Bottom line: the B18 is the most appealing Sentra yet — modern, safe, and well-built. But the CVT remains the open question, and the steering and tie-rod recalls are serious. With recalls completed and the transmission checked, it's a recommendable, economical compact that delivers good value.

Engine Overview

The Nissan Sentra B18 is available with one engine variant at 152 hp.

The MR20DD is the direct-injection variant of the MR series with a timing chain, dual VVT and an aluminium block. Typical DI issues apply: intake valve carbon build-up from around 80,000 km, which makes the idle rough and saps low-end torque — regular walnut blasting or cleaning additives help. The chain lasts well and the thermal management is unobtrusive; as a naturally aspirated unit it is refined but not sporty.

  • !! Timing chain elongates at high mileage from 130,000 km

The MR20DD timing chain can elongate from around 130,000 km causing rattling noises. Low oil level significantly accelerates wear. As the MR20DD is an interference engine, a broken chain causes severe engine damage.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, metallic chattering on load changes, rough running
    700–1,800 $
  • !! Cylinder head cracks — sensitive aluminum from 120,000 km

The MR20DD aluminum cylinder head is sensitive to overheating and over-tightened spark plugs. Even modest overtorquing during a plug change can crack the coolant passages around the plug bores. Coolant loss without any visible external leak is the first warning sign.

Symptoms: Dropping coolant level with no visible external leak, overheating indicator, white smoke from exhaust, coolant smell in engine bay
    1,500–4,000 $
  • !! Intake valves carbon up (direct injection) from 80,000 km

As a pure direct injection engine the MR20DD does not wash the intake valves with fuel. Carbon deposits build from around 80,000 km, causing rough idle, power loss, and increased consumption.

Symptoms: Rough idle, hesitation on pull-away, increased fuel consumption, power loss on a cold engine
    300–700 $

CVT shudder and hesitation — issue continues

Although Nissan made some CVT improvements for the B18 Sentra, shuddering and hesitation remain known issues. Symptoms become more noticeable especially after the 5-year factory warranty expires.

Symptoms: Shuddering and vibration between 25-50 mph, hesitation on takeoff from a stop, CVT overheats on inclines
from 60,000 km
