Nissan Qashqai
1.5L VC-Turbo with variable compression ratio — innovative but complex. Used purely as a generator in the e-POWER system.
e-Power: drive electric, fill up with petrol
190 hp e-Power system with electric drive — immediate response, smooth and surprisingly lively.
Engine Weaknesses 4
The KR15DDT VC-Turbo can develop faults in the main bearings and the L-link of the variable compression mechanism. In severe cases metal swarf is found in the oil sump. The NHTSA opened an investigation into engine failures.
Symptoms: Sudden engine failure, metal swarf in oil, oil pressure warning light, knocking from engine, complete engine shutdown
The complex variable compression mechanism includes actuators and sensors that can fail at high mileage. Repairs require specialist knowledge and are only possible at Nissan authorised workshops.
Symptoms: Check engine light, restricted engine power, irregular combustion, limp mode
The KR15DDT timing chain is by design relatively slender and can rattle earlier than usual. A preventive replacement around 150,000 km is advisable. A broken chain causes total engine failure.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, metallic chattering on load changes, engine stumbling
Since the KR15DDT uses only direct injection, the intake valves are not washed by fuel. Carbon deposits build up from around 50,000 km. Walnut blasting every 60,000–80,000 km recommended.
Symptoms: Rough idle, poor throttle response, power loss, increased fuel consumption, cold start problems
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
The J12 e-Power system can fail with error messages. Defective generators are a known problem, with repair times of up to 10 weeks due to parts shortages.
Some J12s show uneven panel gaps and doors that are hard to close from the factory. Adjustable in the workshop, but an indication of mediocre build quality.
The 12V mild hybrid system in the J12 can produce error messages pointing to faulty sensors or software issues in the hybrid controller. Software updates resolve many problems.
The Sachs shock absorbers on the Qashqai J12 fade early. The car noticeably wallows after just a few years. Replacement with higher-quality dampers recommended.
The original brake discs on the Qashqai J12 wear noticeably fast. Brake judder can appear in some cases below 30,000 km. OEM brake pads recommended.
The narrow drain channels of the panoramic roof on the Qashqai J12 block easily. Water accumulates and can enter the cabin.
The DAB radio in the J12 can fail spontaneously and only recover after the car has been parked for several minutes. Software bugs or connector issues are the most common cause.
The Qashqai J12 blower motor develops annoying noises. A known issue carried over from previous generations.
