Nissan Pathfinder R52
Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice
The Pathfinder R52 (2013–2020) is a radical break with tradition: the rustic ladder-frame off-roader became a unibody, comfort-focused family SUV with crossover character. Instead of low range and off-road genes, the R52 relies on a soft ride, seven seats and long-distance comfort — developed primarily for the North American market. It is powered solely by the VQ35DE V6 petrol with 264 hp, paired with a continuously variable CVT transmission. And that is exactly where its biggest problem lies, one you must understand before buying.
The CVT is the R52's Achilles' heel. It is prone to judder, belt slip and, in the worst case, total loss of drive — issues that led to a class-action lawsuit in the US. The valve body can also fail (pressure fault P17F0), and there was a recall for a CVT cooler hose (14V142). A CVT replacement is expensive, so the transmission history is the key criterion in any purchase. The VQ35DE engine itself is more robust but has a known weakness: the timing-chain guide rail can break, signalled by cold-start rattle.
Add to that typical comfort and electronics issues: the HVAC blend-door actuator fails (no more heating or cooling), the dashboard surface cracks in heat, the brake-light switch can stick and block the shift-lever interlock, and the panoramic sunroof can shatter without warning. There is also a recall for the secondary hood latch (22V420). Taken individually these are annoying but manageable repairs — together they paint the picture of a car that needs attention.
Buying advice: The CVT is the focus. Test drive with attention to judder, slip under acceleration, overheating warnings and unusual revving behaviour. Read the fault memory (P17F0!) and ask about the transmission-fluid history — regular CVT fluid changes extend its life considerably. Listen for chain rattle on cold start. Check the climate control, sunroof, dashboard and all recall statuses.
Verdict: As a family SUV the R52 is comfortable and roomy, but it is no longer a Pathfinder in the old sense — anyone after genuine off-road ability is in the wrong place. And the CVT makes it a gamble: an example with documented transmission care and healthy behaviour can last a long time; a neglected CVT is a time bomb with four-figure repair costs. Here it is not the engine that decides, but the transmission.

Engine Overview
The Nissan Pathfinder R52 is available with one engine variant at 171 hp.
3.5L naturally aspirated V6 with an unmistakable sound — a throaty, sonorous roar that Nissan tuned, according to Calsonic engineers, with Ferrari as a reference. Revs smoothly to 7,000 rpm and really comes alive above 5,000 rpm. Plastic timing chain guides are the well-known Achilles heel from 130,000 km. Oil consumption and synchro wear in the manual gearbox are worth monitoring.
- !! Severe oil consumption from defective piston rings from 25,000 km
Certain production batches (2006 models) have defective piston rings fitted. Consumption can reach 1.5–4.5 l/1,000 km. Nissan replaced complete engines under warranty in such cases.
Symptoms: Heavy blue exhaust smoke under acceleration, significant oil level drop after a few hundred km, oily exhaust smell - !! Con rod bearing wear from oil starvation from 120,000 km
Sustained oil starvation from the piston ring issue can cause connecting rod bearing damage. Engine repair including cylinder head replacement costs around €4,000; a replacement engine is €2,500–3,000.
Symptoms: Metallic clattering and knocking from engine, severe power loss, oil pressure warning - !! Plastic timing chain guides fracture from 160,000 km
The plastic guide rails for the primary timing chain are too thin and brittle by design. From around 130,000–200,000 km they break off and fall into the oil, risking metal contamination and engine damage.
Symptoms: Cold-start rattle that disappears after a few seconds, increasingly loud chain noise, engine warning light at advanced wear

Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| CVT shudder and belt slip — class action issue The RE0F09B Jatco CVT shudders violently when accelerating from a standstill or between 15–40 mph. TSB 15-015A addresses the issue. A class action covering 2015–2018 models extended the CVT warranty to 84 months/84,000 miles. Symptoms: Violent shaking or judder when pulling away from a stop; sudden hesitation at 15–30 mph; bucking and jerking under light throttle from 30,000 km | Medium | |
| CVT transmission failure — complete loss of drive The RE0F09B CVT can fail completely, requiring a full replacement costing $3,500–$8,000. The 2013 model year logged 353+ powertrain complaints on CarComplaints.com. NHTSA Campaign 14V142000 and multiple class action settlements cover various model year ranges. Symptoms: Loss of acceleration; transmission overheating warning; P0776 or P0965 fault codes; whining noise at startup; vehicle enters limp mode or loses all drive from 90,000 km | High | |
| CVT valve body failure — pressure code P17F0 Metal debris from CVT belt wear accumulates in the valve body and disrupts pressure regulation. Code P17F0 signals early valve body damage. If the cooler is not flushed during CVT replacement, debris re-contaminates the new unit, triggering repeat failure. Symptoms: Jerking from a stop; sudden shift shock; fault code P17F0 (transmission oil pressure); transmission enters limp mode; overheating warning illuminates from 60,000 km | High |
