Nissan Micra
1.2L four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. Simple and reliable, adequate for city driving.
Cute but gutless
65 hp three-cylinder — nimble in the city, overwhelmed on the country road.
Engine Weaknesses 3
Main weak point of the K12 petrol engines before the 2005 facelift: the timing chain stretches prematurely, valve timing runs out of sync. Nissan replaced entire batches in the field. Repair costs €800–1,800; engine damage will result if ignored.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling and chattering on cold start or load change, rough running, check engine light
Camshaft sensor wears out or corrodes, providing false signals. Often misdiagnosed when the timing chain is actually stretched. Sensor itself is cheap; diagnosis is key to distinguishing it from the chain problem.
Symptoms: Fault code P0340, check engine light, occasional starting problems, engine stumbling
Valve cover gasket and crankshaft seals leak at higher mileage. Oil leaks often appear after timing chain replacement if seals were not renewed during the repair. Inexpensive repair.
Symptoms: Oil drops and oil traces on engine block, oil smell after driving, oil level slowly dropping
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The Micra K12 suspension is flagged at MOT inspections at an above-average rate. Control arms, tie rod ends, and wheel bearings wear at higher mileage.
The Micra K12 sills rust from the inside due to inadequate factory cavity protection. Visible from around 100,000 km or 10 years. MOT-relevant.
Low beam lights, indicators, and rear lights fail on the K12 at an above-average rate. This is a known weak point and regularly causes MOT failures.
The K12's 5-speed manual gearbox can develop stiff gear engagement, especially second gear. Worn synchro rings are the most common cause at higher mileage.
The Micra K12 blower resistor burns out — the fan only runs on speed 4 or not at all. Cheap part, easy replacement.
The ABS sensor rings in the rear brake drums of the Micra K12 corrode and cannot be removed non-destructively. The complete drum must be replaced — a frequent cost driver.
The K12 interior is made of simple materials that age quickly. Door cards and seat fabric can develop rattle noises.
