Engine Overview
The Nissan 350Z Z33 is available with one engine variant at 280 hp. 1 variants had engine changes — the model year is crucial.
3.5L naturally aspirated V6 with an unmistakable sound — a throaty, sonorous roar that Nissan tuned, according to Calsonic engineers, with Ferrari as a reference. Revs smoothly to 7,000 rpm and really comes alive above 5,000 rpm. Plastic timing chain guides are the well-known Achilles heel from 130,000 km. Oil consumption and synchro wear in the manual gearbox are worth monitoring.
- !! Severe oil consumption from defective piston rings from 30,000 km
Certain production batches (2006 models) have defective piston rings fitted. Consumption can reach 1.5–4.5 l/1,000 km. Nissan replaced complete engines under warranty in such cases.
Symptoms: Heavy blue exhaust smoke under acceleration, significant oil level drop after a few hundred km, oily exhaust smell - !! Con rod bearing wear from oil starvation from 120,000 km
Sustained oil starvation from the piston ring issue can cause connecting rod bearing damage. Engine repair including cylinder head replacement costs around €4,000; a replacement engine is €2,500–3,000.
Symptoms: Metallic clattering and knocking from engine, severe power loss, oil pressure warning - !! Plastic timing chain guides fracture from 160,000 km
The plastic guide rails for the primary timing chain are too thin and brittle by design. From around 130,000–200,000 km they break off and fall into the oil, risking metal contamination and engine damage.
Symptoms: Cold-start rattle that disappears after a few seconds, increasingly loud chain noise, engine warning light at advanced wear

Evolution of the VQ35DE with higher compression (10.6:1), revised intake, and rev limit raised to 7,500 rpm. Noticeably more power in the upper rev range. Critical problem: paper-based oil gallery gaskets behind the timing chain cover fail regardless of mileage and cause oil pressure drops below 15 psi — always measure oil pressure and check for P0011/P0021 codes before buying.
- !! Oil gallery gasket behind timing chain cover fails from 100,000 km
The paper-based oil gallery gaskets behind the front timing chain cover swell or tear. Oil pressure drops without any external leak being visible — camshafts and bearings are starved of oil.
Symptoms: Low oil pressure when warm (below 30 psi at idle), P0011/P0021 fault codes, jerky acceleration, power loss above 2,500 rpm - !! VTC cam phaser rattles from oil pressure drop from 100,000 km
The variable cam timing (VTC) phasers require consistently high oil pressure. When oil gallery gaskets fail, the phasers lose working pressure and rattle — resulting in P0011/P0021 codes and ECM rev limiting to around 3,000 rpm.
Symptoms: Metallic rattle at idle after warm-up, torque loss in mid-rev range, MIL with P0011 or P0021, rev limiting by ECM - !! Timing chain guides and tensioners wear out from 180,000 km
The secondary timing chain tensioners and guide rails of the VQ35HR wear at higher mileage. Missing oil pressure from oil gallery gasket failure accelerates wear further.
Symptoms: Brief cold-start rattle (3–5 seconds), worsens the longer the car has been standing, if neglected permanent rattle and engine warning light

Vehicle Weaknesses
| Weakness | Cost | |
|---|---|---|
| Front control arm bushings wear out The front control arm rubber bushings tear or detach from around 100,000 km. The control arm can then move axially, changing the toe angle and causing dangerous straight-line instability. Symptoms: Knocking or cracking at the front during cornering or on cobblestones, uneven tire wear, vehicle pulls to one side from 110,000 km | Low | |
| Rear differential mount bushings worn The standard silicone-filled differential mount bushing tears under hard driving. Identifiable by black silicone traces on the subframe. The differential then moves during driving. Symptoms: Loud clunking under hard acceleration or clutch engagement, rear axle feels unsettled, black residue visible on subframe from 100,000 km | Low | |
| Sway bar end links worn The nylon ball joint sway bar end links wear prematurely. The nylon bushings settle, the ball joints rattle. Problem occurs especially with spirited driving and after lowering. Symptoms: Metallic rattling or knocking at the front, especially when turning and on uneven road, increasing at low speeds from 80,000 km | Low |
