MINI MINI Cooper S GP

W11B16 1.6L Kompressor 211 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2002โ€“2006
โœ– Stay Away!
Engine W11B16 โœ– Stay Away! 3,430โ€“10,880 $

The W11B16 is the last great supercharged engine in series production โ€” and it sounds the part. The signature whine of the Eaton M45 winding up is unmistakable: no turbo lag, instant throttle pick-up from idle. The GP with 218 hp is the ultimate R53, but also the one that pushes the cooling system hardest. Maintenance truth: change the supercharger oil every 60,000 km โ€” skip that and you are buying a new rotor. Water pump, serpentine belt and chain tensioner form a trio that should be replaced preventively. Oil leaks on the R53 are not a question of if, but when โ€” the oil cooler O-rings, crankshaft seals and valve cover gasket all weep eventually. Only buy used with a complete service history, ideally with proof of supercharger rebuild.

Fun Factor? Legendary!

2,000 units. Thunder Blue only. No rear seats.

The JCW GP R53 is MINI racing with a number plate: Recaro buckets, wind-tunnel rear wing, 7 kg/kW power-to-weight. No ESP, no comfort, just focus. Every unit carries its own production number โ€” 0001 to 2000. Find one, buy it. End of discussion.

Engine Weaknesses 12

!! Water Pump โ€” Secondary Supercharger Damage

The water pump is driven via the Eaton M45 supercharger and runs at roughly 400 rpm faster than the crankshaft in stock form. When the water pump bearings fail, they destroy the supercharger drive gear. Recommended preventive replacement by 90,000 km at the latest.

Symptoms: Engine overheating, cooling failure, supercharger noises, coolant loss

400โ€“1,500 $ from 90,000 km
!! Supercharger Drive Gear Failure

When the water pump fails, the plastic gears of the Eaton supercharger drive are destroyed. A used supercharger starts at around โ‚ฌ350; a new unit is considerably more. Prevention: replace the water pump in time.

Symptoms: Power loss, loud supercharger noises, whistling sounds, engine overheating

500โ€“2,500 $ from 100,000 km
!! Supercharger Nosecone Bearing Failure

The Eaton M45 supercharger loses its gear oil through an ageing rear shaft seal, causing the nosecone bearing to run dry and fail. BMW designated the oil as a 'lifetime fill', which has proved incorrect.

Symptoms: Rattling or metallic whistling under acceleration, tinkling noise when revving, power loss

400โ€“1,200 $ from 100,000 km
!! Supercharger Belt and Tensioner: Snap with Secondary Damage

The supercharger serpentine belt of the W11 snaps at high mileage or after overlong replacement intervals. Particularly critical: the spring-loaded tensioner can strike the crankshaft pulley when the belt breaks and damage it. The result is expensive secondary damage instead of a cheap routine repair.

Symptoms: Squealing or whistling from the engine bay on cold start or after water crossings; brief power drop; on breakage: immediate supercharger failure, engine continues but with no boost

300โ€“1,200 $ from 100,000 km
!! Supercharger Oil Change Missed

The Eaton supercharger needs an oil and belt change every 60,000 km. If this is skipped, the bearings wear prematurely and the supercharger damages itself. This service point is unknown to many used-car buyers.

Symptoms: Bearing noise from the supercharger, whistling, power drop at high rpm

100โ€“300 $ from 60,000 km
!! Clutch Premature Wear

The clutch of the R53 Cooper S wears prematurely due to the high torque of the supercharged engine. A clutch replacement is labour-intensive and expensive, as the engine and gearbox must be removed for access.

Symptoms: Clutch slip, stiff gear changes, poor power transfer, shudder on pull-away

800โ€“2,000 $ from 80,000 km
!! Intercooler Hoses Brittle โ€” Boost Leak

The rubber connecting hoses (snoot boots) between the supercharger and roof-mounted intercooler become brittle and split. The result is boost pressure loss with hesitation and weak acceleration. Silicone hoses are recommended as an upgrade.

Symptoms: Hissing or whooshing at full throttle, rough or sluggish acceleration, fluctuating idle

80โ€“250 $ from 90,000 km
!! Sump and Crankshaft Seal Leak

On the Cooper S R53, over 80% of cars show weeping sump gaskets from medium mileage onward. The crankshaft O-ring shrinks from heat and starts leaking from around 50,000 km.

Symptoms: Oil drops under the front of the engine, oil film on engine block and sump edge

500โ€“850 $ from 60,000 km
!! Thermostat: Malfunction and Overheating Risk

The map-controlled thermostat of the W11 commonly fails from 80,000 km, causing operating temperatures that are too low or too high. Monitor coolant temperature in the cabin โ€” persistently low readings point to a faulty thermostat.

Symptoms: Temperature gauge stays permanently low or jumps suddenly into the red; heating output greatly reduced; engine takes forever to warm up

150โ€“400 $ from 85,000 km
!! Oil Cooler O-Rings Leaking

The square O-rings between the oil cooler and oil filter housing of the W11B16 become brittle at higher mileage. What starts as a single drip can quickly turn into an oil spray. Every R53 with medium or high mileage has either already had these O-rings replaced or should have them done.

Symptoms: Oil drops under the engine front-right, oil film on oil filter housing, oil smell when engine is warm

80โ€“300 $ from 80,000 km
! Valve Cover Gasket and Crankshaft Sensor Leak

Like the W10B16, the W11B16 also tends to leak at the valve cover gasket and crankshaft sensor. Oil film on the engine block is typical. Cheap repair, but avoid oil loss onto hot exhaust components.

Symptoms: Oil film on engine block, oil smell, puddles under the engine

100โ€“300 $ from 100,000 km
! Crankshaft Sensor O-Ring: Oil Leak and Misfires

The O-ring on the W11's crankshaft sensor hardens and leaks โ€” engine oil enters the sensor and causes sporadic misfires or start problems. Cheap repair when caught early; the sensor itself is rarely faulty.

Symptoms: Irregular misfires especially on cold start; engine fails to start or cuts out unexpectedly; oil visible at crankshaft sensor

20โ€“80 $ from 100,000 km
