B38B15U 1.5L Turbo MHEV 136 hp Automatic Front-wheel drive SUV 2024–2028
– Be Careful
Engine B38B15U – Be Careful 6,580–17,400 $

The revised B38 of the U-series received a strengthened timing chain assembly, improved PCV system and optimised thermal management. The 48V mild-hybrid belt-starter takes over boost and recuperation functions, relieving the combustion engine; the belt-starter unit is an additional service item to factor in.

Fun Factor? Decent

Mild-hybrid base

136 hp with 48V assist — zippy enough for everyday use, but not a driving-fun machine. Everyday transport with MINI connection.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Timing Chain Stretch

The B38's timing chain can stretch from around 80,000 km. Rattling on cold start is the first warning signal. Left untreated, chain jump and engine damage are likely.

Symptoms: Rattling noise on cold start that disappears after a few seconds. As it progresses: rough running, power loss, check engine light.

1,500–3,500 $ from 80,000 km
!! Crankshaft Thrust Bearing Undersized

Early B38 engines (up to 04/2015) had an undersized half-shell thrust bearing that only causes problems with manual transmissions. BMW switched to 360-degree flanged bearings.

Symptoms: Vibrations that initially appear to come from the suspension. In extreme cases, catastrophic engine failure from bearing wear.

3,000–8,000 $ from 80,000 km
!! Premature Engine Mount Wear

The three-cylinder's engine mounts wear significantly faster than expected in the MINI due to the transverse mounting and inherent vibrations. Failures documented from as low as 20,000 km.

Symptoms: Banging, creaking noises from the engine bay, engine visibly sitting crooked, increased vibrations at idle.

300–700 $ from 50,000 km
!! Turbocharger Oil Seal Leaking

With insufficient lubrication or at high mileages, the turbocharger's oil seals can wear out. Blue exhaust smoke and increased oil consumption are the result.

Symptoms: Blue exhaust smoke, power loss, whistling noise from the turbo, increased oil consumption.

600–2,000 $ from 100,000 km
!! Thermostat/Water Pump Failure

Plastic thermostat housing and electric water pump can fail from 80,000 km. Coolant loss without visible leak or overheating warning are typical.

Symptoms: Dropping coolant level, overheating warning, heater goes cold or fluctuates.

400–900 $ from 90,000 km
! Carbon Deposits on Intake Valves

With direct injection, the intake valves are not washed by fuel. At higher mileages they coke up, leading to power loss and increased consumption.

Symptoms: Power loss, higher fuel consumption, rough idle.

400–800 $ from 130,000 km
! EGR Valve Coked Up

The EGR valve clogs with soot deposits especially with predominantly short-trip use. Hesitation under part load and increased consumption are typical signs.

Symptoms: Hesitation under part load, rough idle, increased fuel consumption, check engine light.

300–600 $ from 60,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Other Recall: integrated brake system (ABS/DSC failure)

Signal faults in Continental's integrated brake system MK-C2 can in very rare cases lead to increased brake pedal resistance and failure of ABS and DSC. Free replacement of the component.

0–0 $
! Electronics Software platform with teething problems

The new infotainment system of the U-era shows teething problems: settings change without user input. Software updates are applied over-the-air or at the dealer.

0–200 $ from 10,000 km
! Interior Build quality below expectations

Early user reports criticise reduced material quality in visible areas and the removal of physical controls compared to the predecessor F60.

! Body Tailgate does not stay closed

The tailgate reopens after closing. The problem has been documented in forums and occurs repeatedly on certain vehicles. Dealer diagnosis recommended.

80–400 $ from 20,000 km
! Electronics PHEV charging error after faulty charge point

After charging at a faulty charging point, Check Control messages about the high-voltage system appear repeatedly. A workshop diagnosis and software reset are required.

0–300 $ from 10,000 km
! Suspension Suspension vague, steering lacking feedback

Test drives and user experience describe the suspension as rather vague with a very light steering offering insufficient road feedback. Unusual by MINI standards.

i Interior Interior surfaces extremely scratch-sensitive

The painted and soft surfaces in the cabin scratch very easily through normal use. Door cards and the centre console without padding are particularly susceptible.
