OM608 1.5L Diesel 116 hp Automatic Front-wheel drive Wagon 2019โ€“2025
โ€“ Be Careful
Engine OM608 โ€“ Be Careful 3,450โ€“13,580 $

Renault-based small diesel, new generation. Economical with SCR catalyst, but still with little power reserve. Automatic only.

Fun Factor? Decent

Shooting Brake Sensible

85 kW diesel and Shooting Brake: practical, stylish, and frugal. For pragmatists with a sense of style.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Timing belt maintenance obligation

Like its Renault counterpart, the OM608 uses a timing belt. Prescribed change every 120,000 km or 6 years -- frequently forgotten as Mercedes buyers are accustomed to timing chains.

Symptoms: No warning on snap -- sudden engine failure and severe engine damage

600โ€“1,200 $ from 120,000 km
!! Timing belt change critical

The OM608 (Renault K9K base) uses a timing belt. Mercedes specifies 200,000 km change interval; Renault prescribes 120,000 km for the same engine. A snap causes immediate total damage on this interference engine.

Symptoms: No noticeable warning before snap; beforehand: faint squealing, occasionally starting difficulties

450โ€“850 $ from 120,000 km
!! Increased oil consumption / turbo shaft seal

The Renault-based OM608 1.5 CDI sometimes shows increased oil consumption from early on due to a leaking turbocharger shaft seal. Oil mist in the intake tract behind the turbo.

Symptoms: Dropping oil level, oil mist or blue smoke from exhaust, oil in air filter housing behind turbo

800โ€“2,000 $ from 100,000 km
!! EGR valve contamination

As a Renault K9K derivative, the OM608 shares the known EGR valve weakness. With frequent short-trip use, soot particles accumulate, the valve seizes and triggers limp mode.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, power loss, limp mode at around 3000 rpm, increased fuel consumption

280โ€“550 $ from 80,000 km
!! DPF blockage from short trips

With predominantly short-trip use, the OM608 is prone to DPF blockage. Regeneration intervals shorten until active regeneration is no longer sufficient and the filter must be manually regenerated or replaced.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, frequent active regeneration, fuel dilution in oil, power loss

300โ€“1,800 $ from 120,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Other Recall: Turbocharger Oil Supply Line Can Develop a Leak

On CLA C118 from the production period August 2019 to July 2020, the turbocharger oil supply line could develop a leak. Oil reached the underbody and the road surface, increased fire risk.

0โ€“0 $
!! Other Recall: Voltage Supply to Steering Assistance

On CLA C118 model year 2020, the voltage supply to the electric power steering assistance could be impaired. In the worst case the steering servo assistance failed while driving.

0โ€“0 $
!! Gearbox 8G-DCT with Rough Gear Changes

The 8-speed dual clutch gearbox in the CLA C118 occasionally shows rough gear changes, especially when downshifting and in crawl mode. Software updates help temporarily; clutch packs wear at higher mileages.

600โ€“4,500 $ from 50,000 km
!! Electronics Multibeam LED headlight malfunctions

The optional Multibeam LED headlights fail or function only partially. Malfunctions affect the adaptive light distribution.

300โ€“1,500 $ from 50,000 km
! Electronics Multibeam Headlights with Malfunctions

On CLA C118 models with Multibeam LED headlights, occasional malfunctions occur: the high beam assist deactivates unintentionally, or individual LED segments fail.

0โ€“800 $ from 30,000 km
! Electronics Starter battery failures

Starter battery is the most common breakdown cause on the CLA C118. The many assistance and comfort systems place a heavy load on the battery.

120โ€“280 $ from 60,000 km
i Other Loudly Gurgling Fuel Tank

A frequent complaint on the CLA C118 and simultaneously the A-Class W177 is clearly audible fuel sloshing in the tank, especially at partial and low fill levels in corners.
