Mercedes-Benz CLA C117

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

2.7 / 5.0 · Based on 6 engine variants · How we rate

The CLA C117 (2013–2019) was Mercedes' entry into the compact segment — four-door coupe styling in A3/1 Series format. Stylish, but technically not always at Mercedes level. The 7G-DCT dual-clutch gearbox is the biggest headache.

Engine choice: The OM651DE22 2.1 CDI in the CLA 220 CDI (125 kW) is the proven diesel — same engine as in the C-Class. The M270DE20 2.0 Turbo in the CLA 250 (155 kW) is the punchy petrol. Avoid: M270DE16 1.6 Turbo (CLA 180/200) — barely enough for the weight. Enthusiast: M133 2.0 Turbo in the CLA 45 AMG — world-record four-cylinder of its time (265–280 kW), but watch thermostat and cooling under track use.

7G-DCT judders on pull-away and gear changes — the most discussed C117 problem. Affects 30–60% of all cars, especially in city traffic. Gearbox ECU update sometimes helps, clutch replacement $1,650–3,300. Water ingress into footwells through seal issues. Weak interior build quality — creaks and rattles. Starter fire recall (2015/2016, free repair).

Test-drive checklist: DCT at walking pace: juddering on pull-away? Test all door locks. Footwells for moisture. Cold start: engine noises?

2026 market: CLA 180/200 from $8,800. CLA 250 $11,000–17,600. CLA 45 AMG $19,800–38,500.

Insider pick: CLA 250 (M270DE20) facelift from 2016, manual if available — bypasses the DCT problem entirely. Or: CLA 45 AMG facelift (2016+) with documented service history.

CLA 180 d · Diesel· 109–116 PS Engine Change
2013 2019

Renault-based small diesel (K9K). Economical but with little power reserve. Prone to EGR fouling and DPF issues under pure short-trip use.

  • !! Timing belt instead of chain -- maintenance obligation from 120,000 km

The Renault K9K-based OM607 uses a timing belt that must be replaced every 120,000 km or 6 years. Neglecting the change leads to snapping and severe engine damage.

Symptoms: No noticeable warning before snap -- sudden failure with no advance notice if change is overdue
    600–1,200 $
  • !! Timing belt interference engine -- total loss risk from 120,000 km

The OM607 is an interference engine with a timing belt (Renault K9K). Mercedes specifies 200,000 km; Renault recommends 120,000 km for the same engine. If the belt snaps, pistons meet valves -- immediate engine destruction.

Symptoms: Usually no warning before snap; sometimes faint squealing or rattling on cold start
    400–800 $
  • !! Injector failure K9K base from 100,000 km

The Renault-based K9K diesel shows known injector weaknesses. Defective injectors cause poor combustion, increased soot production and drastically shorten DPF regeneration intervals.

Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss, black smoke, frequent DPF regeneration, fault codes for individual cylinders
    300–900 $

2013 2016

Widely used Mercedes diesel with aluminium block and steel liner. High mileages possible but known for injector seal issues, timing chain stretch and EGR problems.

  • !! Chain Tensioner Seal Leaking — Recall

Over 100,000 vehicles recalled: the chain tensioner seal leaks, allowing engine oil to drip onto the exhaust system and potentially ignite.

Symptoms: Dropping oil level, oil smell from engine bay, oily deposits under the vehicle, possible oil fire
    0–300 $
  • !! Timing Chain Stretch (Simplex Chain) from 150,000 km

The OM651 uses a simplex timing chain. With short-trip driving and overdue oil change intervals the chain stretches.

Symptoms: Light rattling noise on cold start from the rear of the engine, no fault code stored
    1,200–3,000 $
  • !! Piezo Injector Faults from 80,000 km

Same Delphi piezo injector problems as in the DE18: 220 CDI and 250 CDI variants affected. Mercedes replaced them with solenoid injectors as part of a service action.

Symptoms: Vibrations and rough running especially under acceleration, elevated fuel consumption
    1,500–3,500 $

CLA 45 AMG · Petrol· 360–387 PS
2013 2019

World record holder at launch: the M133 was the world's most powerful production four-cylinder in 2013. 2.0 litres, 360 hp, 1.8 bar boost — absurd on paper, surprisingly reliable in practice. The well-known weakness is oil contamination of the turbo oil supply line on early vehicles (before Feb. 2014), which led to a recall. The 7G-DCT dual-clutch overheats under hard use in stop-and-go traffic. Keep to service intervals and treat the gearbox gently and you get a long-lived high-performance engine.
