8AR-FTS 2.0L Turbo 245 hp Automatic Rear-wheel drive Coupรฉ 2016โ€“2025
โ€“ Be Careful
Engine 8AR-FTS โ€“ Be Careful 5,150โ€“12,050 $

2.0L turbo four โ€” Toyota/Lexus's first turbocharged engine in decades. Lifespan around 130,000-150,000 miles is poor by Toyota standards. Water pump failures as early as 20,000 miles on early production units. Timing chain can jump without warning โ€” engine replacement territory. 2015-2016 turbochargers were problematic; post-2017 production improved significantly. Three thermostats create cascading failure risk. The aluminum block cannot be repaired if overheating occurs. Adequate power for the NX, but this is not a Toyota engine that inspires confidence in longevity.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Not enough engine for too much car

The 2.0 turbo with 241 hp sounds decent on paper, but it has to move 3,735 lbs. Enough to keep up with traffic, not enough to thrill. The engine revs willingly, but any fun is eaten by the weight. If the V6 already feels boring, don't even test-drive the four-cylinder.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! Premature Water Pump Failure

Water pump fails as early as 20,000 miles on early production units. Replacement often requires timing chain kit removal due to location. If the water pump leaks onto the timing chain, both need replacement. Overheating from pump failure causes irreparable damage to the aluminum block.

Symptoms: Coolant leak, overheating, low coolant warning, antifreeze pooling under engine

800โ€“2,500 $ from 50,000 km
!! Timing Chain Jump / Failure

Timing chain jumps teeth without warning, causing valve-to-piston contact. Engine replacement typically required as repair costs exceed engine value. Poor by Toyota standards โ€” the 8AR-FTS chain system lacks the longevity of naturally aspirated Toyota engines.

Symptoms: Sudden engine noise, loss of power, check engine light, engine stall, failure to start

3,500โ€“6,000 $ from 120,000 km
!! Turbo Wastegate Valve Malfunction 2015โ€“2016

Vacuum regulating valve for the turbine bypass fails on 2015-2016 production units. Causes unstable engine operation at high speed with power dips. TSB issued. Post-2017 turbochargers are improved. Most early failures were replaced under warranty.

Symptoms: Power dips at high speed, unstable acceleration, turbo noise changes, check engine light

400โ€“1,200 $ from 60,000 km
!! Intake Valve Carbon Buildup

Direct injection only on the 8AR-FTS means carbon deposits accumulate on intake valves. Walnut blasting recommended from 50,000-60,000 miles. Less severe than the 4GR-FSE due to higher operating temperatures that partially burn off deposits.

Symptoms: Rough idle, hesitation, reduced power, slightly higher fuel consumption

400โ€“800 $ from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 8

!! HVAC HVAC servo motor malfunction 2015โ€“2017

HVAC servo motors can fail electrically. Air blows from wrong vents or at wrong temperature. Lexus TSB L-SB-0001-21 covers free repair.

0โ€“400 $ from 60,000 km
! Electronics Touchpad infotainment: ergonomic nightmare 2015โ€“2023

Remote Touch trackpad is a major distraction. Input is awkward and imprecise, especially during navigation entry. Replaced by touchscreen from 2024.

! Electronics Display coating peeling 2015โ€“2016

Anti-glare coating on infotainment display can peel, leaving matte spots. Lexus TSB L-SB-0002-16 covers display lens replacement.

0โ€“300 $ from 40,000 km
! Other Overweight: three platforms, one problem

The RC is built on three combined platforms (IS, GS, IS convertible), resulting in excess weight. RC 350 RWD weighs 3,748 lbs โ€” far too heavy for a sport coupe.

i Body Clearcoat: thin and chip-prone

Like other Lexus models, the clearcoat is thin and prone to stone chips, especially on front and hood.

50โ€“800 $
i Interior Center console armrest rattle

Center console and armrest rattle on rough roads. Fixed with felt strips at contact points.

0โ€“50 $
i Other Rear seats: exist on paper only

Rear seats are unusable for anyone over 5'7". Head hits headliner, knee room is minimal. More storage shelf than seat.

i Other Trunk: 10 cu ft, no fold-down rear seats

Trunk holds only 10 cubic feet. The RC F's rear seatback doesn't fold at all โ€” only a narrow ski pass-through.
