Lexus RC XC10

Weaknesses, engine ratings and buying advice

3.7 / 5.0 · Based on 3 engine variants · How we rate

The Lexus RC is a two-door luxury coupe built on the IS platform from 2015 onward. Anyone expecting a sharp sports weapon in the mold of a BMW M4 should adjust their expectations: the RC is deliberately tuned for comfort, sits planted on the road and carries a fair amount of weight. That makes it a relaxed cruiser with a refined interior and the build quality Lexus is known for, rather than a corner-carver. In exactly that role it plays to its strengths — smoothness, material quality and longevity.

When it comes to engines there is a clear recommendation. The 3.5-liter naturally aspirated 2GR-FKS V6 with dual injection is the best choice: combined direct and port injection keeps the intake valves clean, and the engine has a reputation for exceptional durability. Regular service items are essentially limited to the water pump and ignition coils, with a little oil consumption between changes being normal. The older 2GR-FSE (also a 3.5 V6) runs rock-solid and comfortably passes 200,000 kilometers, but has one known weakness: the fifth cylinder can overheat by design, which in extreme cases leads to oil consumption and cylinder wall damage. There were also recalls for the VVT-i oil line and the valve springs — worth checking the history to confirm the work was done. The 2.0-liter turbo (8AR-FTS) is better avoided: it is Toyota's first turbo in a long time, and with service lives around 200,000 to 240,000 kilometers, water pump failures sometimes as early as 30,000 kilometers, timing chain issues and intake valve coking, it falls below the usual Lexus standard.

The typical vehicle-level faults are nothing dramatic. The coating on the central display can peel over time, the air conditioning occasionally suffers from a faulty actuator motor, the thin clear coat is prone to stone chips, and the armrest rattles on some examples. All manageable points that do not call the fundamental reliability into question.

When buying, focus on a well-kept V6, ideally the 2GR-FKS. Confirm the recalls on the older V6 have been completed, keep an eye on the climate control and display, and inspect the paint for stone chips. A complete service record is more the rule than the exception with Lexus and should be present here too.

Bottom line, the RC is an honest, very reliable luxury coupe with excellent build quality. As a naturally aspirated car with the 2GR-FKS, it ranks among the most durable coupes in its class. Anyone chasing sporty handling is better served elsewhere — but for comfort, refinement and longevity, the RC is hard to fault.

Engine Overview

The Lexus RC XC10 is available with 3 engine variants — from 245 to 314 hp. 1 variants had engine changes — the model year is crucial.

RC 300 · Petrol· 245 PS
2016 2025

2.0L turbo four — Toyota/Lexus's first turbocharged engine in decades. Lifespan around 130,000-150,000 miles is poor by Toyota standards. Water pump failures as early as 20,000 miles on early production units. Timing chain can jump without warning — engine replacement territory. 2015-2016 turbochargers were problematic; post-2017 production improved significantly. Three thermostats create cascading failure risk. The aluminum block cannot be repaired if overheating occurs. Adequate power for the NX, but this is not a Toyota engine that inspires confidence in longevity.

  • !! Premature Water Pump Failure from 50,000 km

Water pump fails as early as 20,000 miles on early production units. Replacement often requires timing chain kit removal due to location. If the water pump leaks onto the timing chain, both need replacement. Overheating from pump failure causes irreparable damage to the aluminum block.

Symptoms: Coolant leak, overheating, low coolant warning, antifreeze pooling under engine
    800–2,500 $
  • !! Timing Chain Jump / Failure from 120,000 km

Timing chain jumps teeth without warning, causing valve-to-piston contact. Engine replacement typically required as repair costs exceed engine value. Poor by Toyota standards — the 8AR-FTS chain system lacks the longevity of naturally aspirated Toyota engines.

Symptoms: Sudden engine noise, loss of power, check engine light, engine stall, failure to start
    3,500–6,000 $
  • !! Turbo Wastegate Valve Malfunction from 60,000 km

Vacuum regulating valve for the turbine bypass fails on 2015-2016 production units. Causes unstable engine operation at high speed with power dips. TSB issued. Post-2017 turbochargers are improved. Most early failures were replaced under warranty.

Symptoms: Power dips at high speed, unstable acceleration, turbo noise changes, check engine light
    400–1,200 $

RC 350 · Petrol· 311–314 PS Engine Change
2015 2017

This 3.5-litre V6 with D4-S dual injection is fundamentally solid and comfortably clears 200,000 km when serviced properly. The direct injection gives crisp throttle response, but by design the fifth cylinder runs hotter, which can lead to bore scoring and oil consumption over time. Keep an eye on the water pump and ignition coils from around 50,000 km. Early builds were recalled for the VVT-i oil line and defective valve springs, so confirm those campaigns were completed before buying. Keep the coolant clean and on interval, and it stays a long-lived naturally aspirated engine.

  • !! Cylinder Bore Scuffing from 150,000 km

Similar to the 4GR-FSE but less prevalent. Cylinder bore scuffing leads to oil consumption. Block replacement is the only permanent fix due to thin-wall liner construction. Most 2GR-FSE engines avoid this issue with proper maintenance.

Symptoms: Gradual increase in oil consumption, blue smoke on cold start, oil on spark plugs
    4,000–8,000 $
  • !! VVT-i Oil Line Failure (Recall Campaign) from 100,000 km

Rubber VVT-i oil supply hose degrades over time. Same failure mode as the 4GR-FSE — pinhole develops, expands, oil sprays out. Engine failure from oil starvation if not addressed. Covered under Toyota/Lexus Limited Service Campaign for 2006-2010 models.

Symptoms: Oil leak at front of engine, low oil warning, oil pressure warning light, engine knocking
    0–300 $
  • !! Valve Spring Defect (Recall)

Metal impurities in valve springs cause fracture risk. 2007-2008 production recalled for free spring replacement. Same campaign as the 4GR-FSE. Verify recall completion on any pre-owned purchase.

Symptoms: Misfires, valve train ticking, check engine light, rough running

2018 2025

This 3.5-litre V6 in the modern D-4S form combines direct and port injection — exactly what keeps the intake valves clean and sidesteps the carbon build-up that plagues pure direct-injection units. Strong, refined and more economical in daily use than the turbocharged competition. A known production-related oil leak at the timing cover, caused by its seal, is worth keeping an eye on. The water pump can fail prematurely and is the main wear point. A little oil consumption between change intervals is possible, so check the level regularly. Otherwise a very reliable, long-lived naturally aspirated engine.

  • !! Front Timing Cover Oil Leak (Production Defect) from 80,000 km

The 2GR-FKS inherited the timing cover leak from the 2GR-FE. First and second production years (2016-2018) were worst affected — a production process issue, not a design flaw. Leaks typically appear by the first or second oil change. Later production years are largely free of this problem. Repair costs are extreme due to engine removal requirement.

Symptoms: Oil leak from front timing cover, oil drip on AC compressor, burning oil smell under hood
    3,000–7,000 $
  • !! Premature Water Pump Failure from 80,000 km

The 2GR-FKS shares the water pump weakness with the entire 2GR engine family. Premature failures documented as early as 30,000-50,000 miles. Internal design is improved over the 2GR-FE but longevity remains below Toyota standards. Replacement is moderately labor-intensive.

Symptoms: Coolant leak from water pump area, overheating warning, coolant loss, whining noise from pump
    400–1,200 $
  • ! Oil Consumption Between Changes from 60,000 km

Some 2GR-FKS engines consume oil between changes. Toyota considers up to 1 quart per 1,200 miles within specification. Owners report consumption beginning as early as 30,000-60,000 miles. The owner's manual instructs to check and top off as needed. Not catastrophic but requires monitoring.

Symptoms: Oil level drops between changes, low oil level warning, need to add oil every 1,000-2,000 miles
    50–200 $
