Lexus IS 350
The 2GR-FSE 3.5L V6 is rock-solid โ 200k+ miles is normal. Known issue: cylinder 5 overheating by design can cause oil consumption and cylinder wall damage. Check water pump and coils from 30-50k miles.
310 hp V6, the IS that actually performs
The IS 350 is what the IS 250 should have been from day one. 311 hp from the 3.5L V6, smooth power delivery, and none of the carbon buildup severity that plagues the 4GR-FSE. VVT-i oil line recall on 2006-2010 models is the main concern โ verify completion. The 6-speed automatic is competent if unremarkable. RWD models are more engaging; AWD adds winter capability at the cost of 200 lbs. Depreciation makes a clean IS 350 one of the best used sport sedans under $15k.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Similar to the 4GR-FSE but less prevalent. Cylinder bore scuffing leads to oil consumption. Block replacement is the only permanent fix due to thin-wall liner construction. Most 2GR-FSE engines avoid this issue with proper maintenance.
Symptoms: Gradual increase in oil consumption, blue smoke on cold start, oil on spark plugs
Rubber VVT-i oil supply hose degrades over time. Same failure mode as the 4GR-FSE โ pinhole develops, expands, oil sprays out. Engine failure from oil starvation if not addressed. Covered under Toyota/Lexus Limited Service Campaign for 2006-2010 models.
Symptoms: Oil leak at front of engine, low oil warning, oil pressure warning light, engine knocking
Metal impurities in valve springs cause fracture risk. 2007-2008 production recalled for free spring replacement. Same campaign as the 4GR-FSE. Verify recall completion on any pre-owned purchase.
Symptoms: Misfires, valve train ticking, check engine light, rough running
Water pump bearing or seal fails, causing coolant leak. Documented past 80,000 miles. Thermostat often replaced simultaneously. Overheating risk if not addressed promptly.
Symptoms: Coolant leak from front of engine, overheating, antifreeze smell, low coolant warning
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Electric power steering can fail suddenly while driving. Defective connector on steering rack as root cause. SSC 9LC covers 2006-2007.
Dashboard surface becomes sticky and develops a melted, shiny appearance. Affects 2006-2008 IS 250/350 models. Covered under Lexus warranty enhancement program ZLD (expired). Same material defect as RX and ES models of the same era.
Front lower control arm bushings wear, causing vague steering and clunking over bumps. Common past 80,000 miles. Bushing replacement or complete arm replacement resolves.
Alternator fails, causing battery drain and eventual no-start condition. Documented past 75,000 miles. Replacement is straightforward but the part is not cheap for a V6 application.
Front brake pads and rotors wear faster than expected, particularly on models driven in urban traffic. Rotors may warp if overheated. Use quality pads and resurface or replace rotors at pad change.
Windows move erratically, get stuck, or drop into the door. Driver side particularly affected.
Electric actuator motor in door lock fails. Doors don't lock correctly via remote. Interior lights stay on.
Navigation system uses DVD-based maps that are no longer updated. Screen resolution and interface are dated. Not a defect but affects usability. Aftermarket head units or phone-based navigation are the practical solution.
