Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR

508PS 5.0L V8 Supercharged 575 hp Automatic All-wheel drive SUV 2017–2022
βœ– Stay Away!
Engine 508PS βœ– Stay Away! 13,085–40,000 €

5.0-litre V8 Supercharged with excellent performance but well-known weaknesses. Timing chain set replacement is a matter of when, not if. Supercharger coupling and coolant pipes are further cost items. Running costs are substantial β€” only justifiable with a complete service history and low mileage.

Fun Factor? Legendary!

Sport SVR facelift: even more supercharger

The SVR at 423 kW is the most emotional near-production vehicle from Solihull. Supercharger whine, sports exhaust, adaptive chassis β€” everything focused on driving dynamics. Still impressive off-road. For purists bridging the gap between SUV and sports car.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Timing chain guide plastic failure

The most critical issue on the 508PS: plastic timing chain guides and hydraulic tensioners fail from around 100,000 km β€” faster on the supercharged engine due to higher load. Full repair costs €6,000–10,000.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start (>5s), P0008/P0016/P0017, engine light, power loss

5,000–10,000 € from 110,000 km
!! Plastic coolant pipe under supercharger bursts

Several plastic coolant pipes (crossover pipes, thermostat housing) behind and under the supercharger become brittle from thermal cycling. Sudden failure often causes engine damage before the driver can react.

Symptoms: Sudden coolant loss, overheating warning, steam, limp mode

1,500–8,000 € from 100,000 km
!! Supercharger torsional coupler wears out

The Eaton supercharger torsional coupler β€” a plastic and metal spring assembly β€” breaks apart over time. Land Rover issued a TSB. The rattling sounds like gravel inside the supercharger and disappears under higher load.

Symptoms: Rattling from the supercharger at idle (sounds like stones in a blower), decreasing supercharger output

800–2,500 € from 90,000 km
!! Valve stem seals leaking: oil consumption

The supercharged AJ133 also suffers from valve stem seal wear. Oil-fouled spark plugs and elevated oil consumption are typical. Replacement should be considered when timing chain repairs are carried out at the same time.

Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start, oil-fouled spark plugs, oil consumption > 0.5L/1000km

2,000–6,000 € from 120,000 km
!! Ignition coil failure (multiple simultaneously)

Ignition coils on the 5.0 SC can fail β€” typically several at once. Poor ignition combined with oil-fouled plugs from valve seal wear accelerates the failure.

Symptoms: Rough running, P030X codes, engine light, hesitation under acceleration

400–1,500 € from 110,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 8

!! Suspension Air suspension: compressor and air springs

Air suspension compressor and air springs fail regularly. Vehicle drops after parking, compressor runs continuously. Valve block, height sensors and reservoir tank also affected. Replacing one air spring costs over 1,500 euros.

900–2,800 € from 100,000 km
!! Body Panoramic sunroof: drain corroded

Panoramic roof drain hoses corrode at the connector fitting and break off. Rainwater runs uncontrolled into the body, collects under the driver's seat and damages the audio amplifier and ECUs. Several vehicles written off.

500–3,000 € from 70,000 km
!! Other Recall: door lock opens while driving

Door lock module defective β€” doors can open unintentionally while driving. Land Rover recall for over 65,000 vehicles (2014–2016). Sealed unit must be completely replaced; no partial repair possible.

285–600 €
!! Brakes Brake discs warped, caliper seizing

Brake discs warp prematurely due to the vehicle's high mass. Brembo calipers with steel guide pins in aluminium housings corrode and seize. Average disc life approximately 50,000 km. ECU-controlled pistons require specialist diagnostics.

500–1,600 € from 50,000 km
!! Other AdBlue system: NOx sensor and excessive consumption

Diesels from 2016 with AdBlue/SCR systems show excessive consumption and sensitive NOx sensors. Overfilling damages the sensor. Vehicle immobilises itself when AdBlue tank is empty. Fault diagnosis starts at 75 euros.

400–1,200 € from 80,000 km
!! Suspension Front lower wishbone worn

Front lower wishbones (straight and curved variants) wear early due to vehicle weight. Bushings are barely possible to press in correctly β€” full arm replacement recommended. Wheel alignment essential after repair.

400–900 € from 80,000 km
!! Electronics Airbag system warning due to broken wire

The most common cause of the SRS warning light is a broken wire in the thin cables under the front seats. Land Rover solution: overlay cable repair. Cheaper than replacing the control unit. Simple OBD diagnosis is sufficient to narrow down the fault.

100–400 € from 80,000 km
! Electronics Infotainment freezes or restarts

InControl Touch and InControl Touch Pro freeze while driving or boot spontaneously. Instrument cluster and infotainment go black simultaneously. Bluetooth connections drop. Software updates improve the situation but do not resolve the issue permanently.

300–1,500 € from 70,000 km
