Land Rover Range Rover Evoque
The 2.0L Ingenium four-cylinder diesel has been widely used since 2015 but suffers from structural weaknesses: timing chain (particularly vulnerable pre-2019), oil dilution from DPF regeneration on short trips, and turbocharger problems caused by poor oil quality. Oil changes every 10,000 km instead of the recommended 21,000 km are strongly advised.
Ingenium diesel: competent but with question marks
The 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel runs more refinedly than the outgoing 224DT and is quieter. With 132 kW the Evoque makes solid progress. Short-trip drivers should be cautious about oil dilution and DPF issues.
Engine Weaknesses 7
The 204DTD timing chain stretches prematurely due to worn plastic guides and degraded lubrication from oil dilution. Chains fitted before 2019 are particularly affected. Chain snap is possible.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start, engine warning light, power loss, fault codes P0016 or P0341
Incomplete DPF regeneration cycles allow unburnt fuel to drip into the sump. Particularly critical on short trips with the transversely mounted engine — the distance between turbo and DPF is too great for passive regeneration.
Symptoms: Early service warning well before interval, oil level above max mark, fuel smell in oil, increased engine wear
Turbochargers fail due to oil dilution-related lubrication degradation and plastic debris from timing chain guides. A second turbocharger can be destroyed by debris from the first.
Symptoms: Blue or black exhaust smoke, whistling or hissing noise, severe power loss, engine warning light
The 204DTD common rail injectors are damaged by fuel contamination and elevated operating temperatures. Over-fuelling leads to extreme heat buildup and can damage pistons and cylinder liners.
Symptoms: Rough idle, difficult cold starts, excessive black exhaust smoke, increased fuel consumption
The 204DTD EGR valve carbons up with predominantly short-trip and stop-and-go use. A blocked valve increases emissions and adds further load to the pistons.
Symptoms: Excessive soot, power loss at low RPM, engine warning light, rough idle
Coolant leak at the thermostat housing drips onto the piston cooling valve solenoid and destroys it. Causes a false "critically low oil level" warning even when oil level is correct. Part number LR073684.
Symptoms: Yellow engine warning light, false critically low oil level warning, diagnostic code P25A9-00
The DPF regenerates poorly on the transversely mounted Ingenium engine because the DPF sits too far from the turbo and barely reaches the required temperature. Particularly critical in urban driving.
Symptoms: DPF full warning, power drop, increased fuel consumption, difficulty on cold start
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
The ZF 9-speed gearbox on early models (2011–2014) shudders at low speeds and during pull-away. Transmission fluid reset and adaptive learning reset are frequently needed; in some cases gearbox replacement is required.
The same Haldex Gen 4 unit as in the Freelander 2 fails at the same point: pre-charge pump (fault codes P1889-14), accumulator or control unit corrosion after 60,000–100,000 km.
The standard or optional panoramic roof on the L538 does not seal permanently at the joint with the bodywork in the roof rail/rear area. Water drips into the boot or footwell.
Due to the brake system characteristics, the Evoque brakes harder at the rear. Rear discs rust heavily and reach the wear limit as early as 50,000–60,000 km, sometimes within the warranty period.
The electric door lock motors give up — particularly on the rear doors. Doors cannot be opened with the central locking. Replacement parts are inexpensive, but fitting requires disassembly.
The keyless entry system responds unreliably or fails completely. Vehicle cannot be locked or unlocked even though the key is nearby.
Air conditioning fails to cool sufficiently or heating does not regulate reliably. Sometimes the condensation drain is blocked, sometimes faulty control units or blower motors are the cause.
The bonnet does not sit precisely against the frame and rubs against the bodywork when opening or during driving. Paint is damaged and stone chip-like marks appear.
Reports & Tests
The Evoque I proves to be a pleasingly reliable British SUV with few weak points.
