At 213 kW this Discovery Sport is unusually powerful for a turbocharged four-cylinder. In everyday use it feels more direct than any of the diesels. For buyers wanting to use the Discovery Sport as a sporty SUV, this is the most interesting petrol in the range.

The 204PT petrol shares its timing chain architecture with the diesel counterpart. Chains pre-2019 are particularly susceptible. Repair requires gearbox removal (20–30 hours labour).
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start, engine warning light, rough idle, misfires
The Ingenium petrol thermostat housing is known for coolant leaks. Escaping coolant can drip onto hot engine components and damage secondary parts.
Symptoms: Coolant loss without visible external leak, fluctuating engine temperature, steam from the engine bay, sweet smell
Turbocharger failure from oil starvation and bearing damage. On the 204PT the turbo oil supply is closely linked to the timing chain lubrication situation.
Symptoms: Whistling or howling noise, power loss under acceleration, oil warning light
The turbocharged four-cylinder tends toward elevated oil consumption at higher mileages. Oil burning at piston rings and turbocharger shaft seal are the most common causes.
Symptoms: Regular top-ups required, bluish smoke on acceleration
Coolant pump malfunction causes increased cooling fan noise and a power reduction. JLR has issued service action N451.

The ZF 9-speed gearbox shudders during pull-away and shifts harshly. Early production models from 2014–2016 are particularly affected. In some cases a full gearbox replacement is needed; in others a software reset helps.
The Haldex pre-charge pump fails at 50,000–80,000 km when oil change intervals are not observed. The oil filter accumulates wear debris and the pump overheats.
The drains of the optional panoramic roof become blocked and channel rainwater into the interior — typically into the front and rear footwells or the boot.
The rubber bushes on the front control arms wear and produce clunking over rough surfaces. Typically after 60,000–90,000 km — earlier on harder-driven examples.
Same weakness as the Evoque L538: rear brakes contribute disproportionately to deceleration. Rear discs and pads need replacing every 40,000–60,000 km.
Water enters the passenger or driver footwell through the windscreen seal or roof drainage channels. Control units in the footwell can be damaged by moisture.
The InControl touchscreen in the Discovery Sport L550 frequently freezes, shows a black screen or responds with a delay. Software updates reduce the frequency but do not permanently resolve the issue.
Parking sensors fail or give false alarms. Reversing camera shows a distorted or frozen image. Often due to connector corrosion or wiring damage behind the bumper.
